hen it comes to your eyes most people are guilty of taking them very much for granted – until something goes wrong. But like teeth, if you treat them well and have them checked regularly then you can avoid certain problems that many people develop when they get older. We speak to eye experts to find out more.
not just to make people think you are a celeb; sunglasses were invented as protection for the eyes and that is why everyone should wear them every time the sun comes out. ‘Wearing sunglasses will protect eyes from uv exposure,’ says a professional adviser for the association of optometrists (aoP, www.aop.org. uk). ‘ultraviolet (uv) light is a risk factor for cataract and age-related macular degeneration (aMd). exposure to this when you are young does the most harm for later life, so make sure you protect children with sunglasses, hat and sun block. ‘always wear sunglasses labelled Bs en 1836 to ensure they provide good uv protection. remember, uv absorbing lenses can also be added to your everyday glasses.’
Why should I have regular eye tests?
‘some potentially blinding conditions don’t cause symptoms so you could be losing your sight without realising it,’ says a spokesperson for the aoP. ‘also, eye tests don’t pick up just eye problems, they can reveal general
