Low-fat goods may be packed with sugar and high in calories, while products labelled “no added sugar” can be full of sweeteners which are potentially damaging to your health.’ So despite label guidelines, it can be easy to overdo it on certain harmful ingredients if you’re not careful. So how can you protect your health? ‘Always, always study the labels,’ advises Linda. ‘Don’t fall for the big, fter 30 years, the government has ﬁnally admitted that certain food additives can be harmful to children’s health, causing hyperactivity as well as Attention Deﬁcit Disorder (ADD) , according to the Food Standards Agency (www.food.gov.uk). Thanks to the TV ads, everyone knows too much salt is bad for your heart. But how much do you really know about what you eat – for example, would you have thought that a cup of powdered hot chocolate can contain as much salt as in six bags of crisps? Or that frozen vegetables can often contain added sugar? Even though there are now strict guidelines about food labelling, it can be difﬁcult to know exactly what’s hidden in foods unless you study the small print. ‘The problem we have is that labels can be misleading,’ says nutrition expert Linda Lazarides, clinical director of the Wellington Natural Health Centre (www. wellington-health.com). ‘Something may say “free from additives” on the front, but when you read the label on the back it 120 | SEPTEMBER 2012 Beware A bold statements on the front, always check the small print on the back in the ingredients list. The higher up something is in the list, the more there is of it in the product. And if you can’t understand what the items are on the label, then it’s probably safe to assume it’s not good for you.
