Tom (82), who started in Timahoe in 1951, also worked in Ballivor, Turraun Bog No. 2, Derrinlough, and Boora. he ended his career as a budgetary control and standard costing inspector working out of Newbridge. “My wages when I started were £3, one shilling and six pence – there was 240 pence in the pound,” said Tom, adding that 26 clerical staff worked in Timahoe. n early 2011 feedstock experienced fires at Gilltown horticulture Bog in Co. Kildare, lemonaghan and Bellair Bogs in Boora, Clonad Bog in Derrgreenagh and Coolnagun Bog in Mountdillon. These, along with smaller fires, caused serious damage to peat stocks and a high financial loss to Bord na Móna. Our main focus in the prevention and management of bog fires is the safeguarding of members of the public, employees and property external to and within the ownership of the company. In addition, management recognises any legal obligations placed upon them relating to fire safety. Bord na Móna has completed a fundamental review of its fire policies and procedures. This has involved a review and updating of our fire prevention and fire-fighting procedures; I greater communications and co-operation with communities adjacent to our bogs; greater emphasis on fire awareness, fire prevention and fire-fighting training for our employees; provision of bog area maps and contact numbers to all local fire services and closer communications and co-operation with relevant public agencies, fire Services, Gardaí, Coillte, Environmental Protection Agency, etc.; upgrading of fire-fighting equipment; instigation of publicity campaigns in local media in order to increase public awareness of fire danger and prevention; and increased security and decreased public access to our bogs. hopefully, weather and bog conditions during summer 2012 will not be as conducive to bog fires and the behaviour of a small number of neighbouring landowners will change.
