Project uPdate (l-r): Chairman Fergus McArdle, Minister Pat Rabbitte, Minister Richard Bruton and Gabriel D’Arcy, CEO at Bord na Móna Headquarters B ord na Móna is to create 91 new jobs as part of a €6 million research and development (R&D) investment over the next three years with the support of government through Enterprise Ireland (EI). The announcement was made at Bord na Mona’s Newbridge headquarters by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte TD. These 91 jobs are in addition to 20 high-tech jobs, which were in place in March, and add to Bord na Móna’s skilled, high-tech, graduate workforce. “Bórd na Móna is an integral HigH-tecH jobS booSt part of Ireland’s heritage and this investment in innovation ensures it will be integral to Ireland’s future as an innovation nation,” said Minister Rabbitte. “Bord na Móna is a significant contributor to Ireland’s economy in terms of employment and output and this significant step to secure their future growth and invest in their international strategy is to be strongly welcomed.” EI is supporting the work of the Innovation Division in high technology growth areas such as clean technology, carbon reduction and growing media. “Cleantech is a sector that we, as a government, are targeting for support, as we believe Ireland has distinct advantages and the capacity to be a pioneer in this area,” said Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, who co-announced the jobs boost. These jobs are, he said, “about providing concrete supports to a large, successful State company to create real, high-end jobs in the sector”. The move is part of Bord na Móna’s long-standing innovation strategy. “We were the first company to build a wind farm in Ireland and Bord na Móna proprietary technology is used in more than 500 Clean Water and Clean Air installations across the globe from Osaka to Oslo,” said CEO Gabriel D’Arcy, welcoming the support from EI. Spirit AwArdS recogniSe core vAlueS T he Spirit Awards commenced on January 1 and were established to recognise employees/teams who represent the core values of Bord na Móna and demonstrate our positive behaviours. The first-round deadline has passed and nominations are in! On April 27, the company will name the first group of employees to be formally recognised for their contribution to Bord na Móna. This is the inaugural Spirit Awards and will help the scheme to gain momentum and grow. The Spirit Awards rely on the participation of employees. It is a testament to the positive activity of staff across the company that, despite the scheme being new, there were plenty of nomination forms for the Recognition Committee to choose from. Keep an eye on the notice boards for the first-round winners and we will catch up with the Spirit Awards again in our next edition of Source. The Spirit Awards are now accepting nominations for round two so let’s keep sharing the tales of good work being done across Bord na Móna and send in a nomination form! 20 | Source Spring 2012
