Bord na Móna is sponsoring the Leinster gaa series, incorporating the o’Byrne cup, the WaLsh cup and the Kehoe cup Team ord na Móna’s sponsorship of the Leinster gaa series is the first time that the series has ever had sponsorship in its 57-year history. the company is sponsoring the o’Byrne cup and shield, Walsh cup and shield, and Kehoe cup and shield, to be known as the Bord na Móna Leinster gaa series. the funds raised will be a huge boost to the hardship fund which helps players, officials and the wider members of the gaa community. “We are always looking for sponsorship opportunities with organisations whose values and traditions would be closely aligned to our own,” said gerry o’hagan, head of Marketing and communications. this three-year link with the gaa is encapsulated in the signage for Bord na Móna’s sponsorship, which bears the three words: community, respect, commitment. “as an organisation, we’re committed to corporate social responsibility (csr), in working with communities generally in support of a whole range of initiatives alleviating hardship,” said gerry. “What attracted us to this was that the net proceeds of these games will go into the Leinster gaa hardship fund.” the Leinster gaa hardship fund is the only maTes B one of its kind offered by a provincial gaa council and has been in existence since the founding of the o’Byrne and Walsh cups in 1954. previous assistance that helped local communities, families and players has included financing for medical bills, rebuilding family homes lost through tragic circumstances, and financial payments to assist disabled players. “this is also a good commercial opportunity for Bord na Móna. We’ve been involved in sponsorship at a local level but this is our first step into provincial sponsorship. and this arrangement recalls the all-ireland gaa Bord na Móna interworks games, which were a great success.” success is also at the root of this sponsorship of the Leinster gaa series where 49 matches were Profile A winning formula as a Bord na Móna employee and winner of Walsh cup medals on four occasions, Jim troy is perfectly placed to appreciate the company’s sponsorship of the Leinster gaa series. Jim played his club hurling with Lusmagh in co. offaly and was a member of offaly’s senior inter-county team from 1981 until he retired in 1995. “the Walsh cup is your first chance to get out hurling, so it’s great preparation for the championship,” said Jim, who has also won three all-ireland medals, eight Leinster medals, and one national hurling League medal. “it’s a bigger competition now, with the colleges involved. and, when i played, if your team was knocked out, you were out of the competition, whereas now you get to play in the shield, so the team gets more matches.” an operations leader in Blackwater, Jim wore the number one jersey as goalkeeper for his county and captained the team when it won the Walsh cup in 1990. that was a sporting career highpoint, as was the 1994 all-ireland. “We played Limerick and with five minutes to go, we were five points down and looked to be beaten. We won by six points in the end. that was incredible – it’s a dream for any player to win an all-ireland.” 10 | Source Spring 2012
