Ready for the challenge SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY 2013-2016 LAUNCHED ESB’S SUSTAINABILITY Strategy 2013-2016 was launched by Pat O’Doherty, Chief Executive on September 30th 2013. The strategy has been developed in conjunction with representatives from throughout the business, and builds on the previous success of the Strategic Framework – ESB’s first formal sustainability strategy. This is about embedding sustainability in all aspects of our business. It is about the responsible management of scarce resources. It is what responsible companies do as a core value, and in ESB we pride ourselves in acting responsibly, always.” The success of the first Sustainability Programme, 2008-2012, lay in how it managed to engage a wide range of staff in the process of embedding sustainable practices at the heart of how we do business in ESB, with people taking the initiative in identifying and implementing new, more sustainable resource-efficient ways of working. This energy and commitment meant that the targets we set ourselves in 2008 – of reducing ESB’s internal and external carbon footprint by 30% – have been achieved and exceeded, along with other great progress made in relation to water management and waste recycling. continued on page 3 Gate 3 wind farm projects The connection of renewable energy to the electricity network is managed in Ireland by the application of the Group Processing Approach (GPA).
