Following extensive accreditation audits at esB networks depots, stores, garages, Hv stations and construction sites nationwide in november 2010, esB network’s environmental Management system has been deemed, by external Auditors Certification europe, to comply with the requirements of the iso 14001 environmental management standard. the certification is the culmination of an intensive project, led by the environmental Management team in esB networks, that involved representatives from all relevant Business lines and external consultants wYg ireland ltd. the iso 14001 certificate was formally presented to esB networks by John Ryan, MD of Certification europe, at a presentation in st lotts Road depot on thursday March 24th. Commenting on the success, esB networks MD Jerry o’ sullivan said, “in esB networks, we recognise that our activities have environmental impacts and that it is our responsibility to manage these impacts in a manner that minimises any associated environmental risk and potential liability. the eMs provides us with the framework to achieve this objective and supports our vision to be a world-class, sustainable, networks business” the challenge now is to maintain accreditation and further enhance the system developed. Continued certification to iso 14001 will involve a series of twice-yearly surveillance audits by external auditors. All esB networks locations may be audited, so it is vital that we build on the progress made to date in order to maintain certification and continuously improve the way we conduct our operations from an environmental perspective. IT application to support EMS the eMs is supported by an it Application developed by the environmental Management team, with input from both the eMs Project Board and the various representatives from relevant business lines within the wider esB networks’ organisation. this input was crucial in developing a system that would work for the esB networks business and help us to manage our environmental aspects more effectively. the application uses Microsoft office sharePoint server and is divided into six sub-sites that contain all the latest information that management and staff may need in order to comply with the requirements of the iso 14001 standard. The key features of the IT application are: • It is accessible to all ESB Networks staff. • All relevant environmental information, eg procedures, job aids, statistics, details regarding environmental incidents, audit findings and relevant communications initiatives are contained within the one application. • Only current versions of documents are available to users. the environmental Management team would like to thank the eMs Project Board, Business line Representatives, Corporate sustainability and all relevant management and staff who assisted in the overall eMs Project, and it looks forward to your continued help and support. n For further information on the ESB Networks EMS please contact any member of the Environmental Management Team – contact details available on the EMS IT Application homepage: esbmoss/sc/ esbnetworks/emt/default.aspx Pat Daly in national skills competition Pat Daly, a third year apprentice based in Wilton in Cork, recently competed in the National Skills competition in CIT representing CIT and ESB.
