to remember Omar
Khayyám? No,
not the Rubáiyát,
but the Japanese
sparkling wine
that you could
buy in British supermarkets
in the 1980s - and quite
remarkably, it was made from
Chardonnay. I'm not sure when
it disappeared off the shelves,
but now that a Japanese wine
created from the local Koshu
grape has won a Regional
Trophy at the prestigious 2013
Decanter Asia Wine Awards,
perhaps a brave supermarket
wine buyer will think about
stocking Japanese wine again.
In fact, there are plenty of
countries with no tradition of
winemaking that are now giving
it a go (some more successful
than others). Take India, for
example, it speaks volumes
that trendsetter Laithwaites has
started selling Indian wines.

t
One to watch keenly because
the country has a strong
viticultural heritage and the
potential to make good wine
is rising as more money is
poured into the industry and
more international varieties are
planted. There are numerous
indigenous grapes (most of
them unpronounceable) and,
of these, the one to look for is
Plavac Mali for gutsy reds.
Burma
This is a curiosity because all
the textbooks will tell you that
vines do not thrive in a tropical
climate - and yet I have in my
possession a bottle of Burmese
wine! This was made at a winery
in Pyin Oo Lwin, 3,500 feet above
sea level in the Shan Highlands,
though it's still hot and damp.
Now all I have to do is summon
up the courage to open it!
Belgium and the
Netherlands
Vines are now
flourishing here
(although not in
north Holland) and the
wine industry is undergoing
something of a revolution, albeit
a small one. Chardonnay-based
wines can be tasty and Belgium
also produces some decent fizz.
India
In general, India's climate
is wholly unsuitable for the
cultivation of vines. Although,
as with all rules, there are
exceptions. There were just
six wineries here in 2001; this
number has now risen to more
than 50. Of these, Chateau
Indage and Sula Vineyards,
India's leading premium wine
brand, both found high up in
the Maharashtra hills east of
