ONSIDE / INTERVIEW

« A key part of Seneca's network is one of the most energetic men in the business
world - a cross between Peter Kay and Tony Robbins - ladies and gentlemen, meet
Michael Finnigan »

I

've known Michael Finnigan for over a decade now. He's
a bundle of energy, a burst of adrenaline and a massive
force for spreading goodness and virtue. What he does is
so un-British, it goes right against the grain of our reserve,
in particular the "not-so-bad" "mustn't grumble" northern
traits you'd expect.
In fact, he's so different, you wonder what he's on, but below
the smile, the bonhomie and the charm, there's a toughness
about him as well.
When you meet people who have heard of him, or have
seen him speak at business events, they often default to the
sports psychologist persona. Oh, yes, the guy that worked
with Darren Clarke, or Jimmy White, or Wigan Athletic?
Yes, that's the one. And why not? There are few business
motivators with a trophy cabinet so full of silverware: the
Open Championship, the FA Cup, the cricket World Cup
and the Ashes, to name just a few.
Indeed, it's for his work with his sporting clients that he is
perhaps best known - the reason why you may recognise his
beaming grin, his infectious twinkle and his unmistakable
Lancashire burr from Sky or the BBC news.

« With clients that include Seneca, Ikea,
Rolls Royce, Deutsche Bank and the
Royal Mail, Michael Finnigan is playing in
the Premier League of business. »

But they tend not to give out these kind of awards for what
he's really, really good at though, how he actually earns his
living and how he devotes 90 per cent of his time - increasing
belief, setting goals and transforming businesses.
"Elite sports people work with psychologists to improve
their performance, so why shouldn't corporates? Engaged
individuals can bring much more to a business and help
it to create and maintain a competitive advantage. The
businesses that put employees front and centre will stand
the test of time."
With clients that include Seneca, Ikea, Rolls Royce, Deutsche
Bank and the Royal Mail, Michael Finnigan is playing in
the Premier League of business, but his heart is never far
from the hard-working small business owner.
