SPOTLIGHT 1. Hospitality What? The UK hospitality and catering industry is made up of about 263,000 outlets, and employs a workforce of 1.7 million people, according to the British Hospitality Association. And with the 2012 London Olympics just around the corner, hospitalityrelated jobs are on the increase. Where? Restaurants offer a variety of roles and if you’re passionate about food, the restaurant industry could be the right career move for you. Catering is the business of providing food service to events, establishments or business clients. Jobs can range from lunchbox delivery to mass media events. Hotels are a great avenue for a hospitality career, with just over 46,000 hotels and guest houses in the UK, whether you’ve got a penchant for cleaning, front of house or publicity, the hotel industry has a vast spectrum of jobs available. How? There is no single route into the leisure industry. Careers are very open to individuals with a combination of practical experience, strong interpersonal skills and an understanding of business. Teaching 2. What? Education is a critical part in children’s development and can shape their future. If you’re keen to make a difference on a daily basis, teaching could be the ideal career for you. Where? Primary schools have pupils ranging from the ages of 4 to 11. At primary school, children are taught all subjects, so be prepared to switch between Numeracy, Art, PE and History (amongst others) on a daily basis. Secondary schools cover children aged 11 to 16 or even 18 years of age, if there is a Sixth Form. Teaching in a secondary school will probably mean you specialise in a subject, so this is more suitable for those wishing to stick to one subject area. How? Once you’re certain that teaching is the career for you, you need to achieve qualified teaching status. If you already have an undergraduate degree (not in teaching) then you will need to achieve a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) – but there are also plenty of undergrad courses available.
