MR HASAN AHMED MCh, FRCS, FRCS (Tr & Orth) is a consultant orthopaedic upper limb surgeon at Whipps Cross University Hospital, London. He heads the orthopaedic department as Lead Clinician in London and the south east and he focuses on problems of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. Surgery through the keyhole Mr Hasan Ahmed is well known for his expertise in keyhole surgery of the upper limb – his skills were even needed for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games! Mr Hasan Ahmed came to the UK as a two year old. He went abroad in his teens and returned to obtain his surgical training in the UK. He was awarded the FRCS in 1993 and trained in orthopaedic surgery in Liverpool, London, Southampton and Portsmouth. Mr Ahmed was awarded the prestigious Master of Orthopaedic Surgery degree from the University of Liverpool in 1997 with a thesis on minimal internal fixation of elbow fractures. The Liverpool masters degree is the oldest orthopaedic degree in the UK. He passed the FRCS (Tr and Orth) in 2001 and completed his training by undertaking advanced Fellowship training in shoulder and upper limb surgery in London with Mr Andrew Wallace and Mr Roger Emery at Hammersmith Hospital NHS Trust and St Mary’s Hospital. Mr Ahmed has also published many international scientific papers. Training and skills Mr Ahmed is a keen educator. He acts as clinical and educational supervisor to the next generation of surgeons and is an invited speaker at training courses. Several of his trainees have gone on to be appointed as consultants in their own right. Following completion of his training, he was appointed as consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Whipps Cross University Hospital, London, in 2005. Here he pioneered advanced shoulder arthroscopy techniques. Prior to his appointment, no complex shoulder or elbow surgery was performed there using arthroscopic (keyhole) techniques. Mr Ahmed has pioneered keyhole techniques for fixation of complex fractures of the shoulder and has presented his technique both nationally and internationally. Several scientific papers describe his technique. He has a keen interest in sports and has treated many professional sports people including footballers from Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient football clubs. Mr Ahmed was also selected as a member of the shoulder and elbow specialist team by LOCOG for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where he was involved in the treatment of injured Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Areas of interest SHOULDER SURGERY Mr Ahmed performs the vast majority of operations using arthroscopic surgery techniques. This includes operations such as arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic stabilisation for dislocation, arthroscopic shoulder decompression, arthroscopic AC joint excision, arthroscopic biceps (SLAP) repair, and arthroscopic capsular release for frozen shoulder. Keyhole surgery greatly reduces postoperative pain, scarring and recovery time. http://www.shoulders.org.uk
