BIKE TRACK OPENS IN THE MIDLANDS
Biking fever let rip as the first-ever fully designed and planned bike track in Ireland
opened in the heart of the midlands earlier this year.
The new motor biking track is on land that was granted under lease by Bord na
Móna to a local start-up company, Derryarkin Motocross. The 'Arrive and Ride' track
is located close to Junction 3 on the M6 and is expected to attract quad drivers and
bikers from across the region.
The track at Derryarkin is 1,800 metres long and varies between six and ten metres
wide, incorporating a series of turns, jumps and straights, all designed in accordance
with Motorcycle Ireland rules and regulations.
A bog rehabilitation trial was set up at
Kilberry Bog, Co. Kildare, during the year.
Using methods originally developed in
Oweninny, field drains were blocked in
a selected area of Kilberry that has been
out of production for some time. The trial
will examine whether holding more water
in this area would aid re-vegetation and
habitat development.
Meanwhile, Red Grouse numbers at
Ballydangan are set to increase with
birds being transferred from another bog
as part of the Ballydangan Red Grouse
Project. Leaseholders Moore Gun Club
continues to manage the site.
28 NEW CYCLISTS
Fitness is on the up around the company
with 28 bicycles ordered recently under the
Cycle to Work Scheme. Twenty six bikes were
ordered through Bikeit, with two ordered from
BuildaBike. The ability to purchase locally and
keep the business in the community is proving
to be a bonus for all employees.

INNOVATION ON THE MOVE
The Innovation Department is evolving, with the focus now centred on the commercial business
activities, while the overall process will be overseen by a scaled-down centre. Innovation Team
members have transferred to PowerGen to work on the energy export project (Clean Energy Hub)
and to the Consumer and Professional business to work on low-intensity carbon fuels projects. More
Innovation Team members will move to Resource Recovery and Anua early next year.
All of these personnel will remain in close contact with the central innovation team for support in
activities such as co-ordination of project-related tax credits, direct funding, maintenance of a groupwide
portfolio of projects, identification of cross-business opportunities, and external partnerships. The staff in
the centre are essentially moving from a delivery mode to a management/oversight role.
SAFETY UNDER
REVIEW
Mountdillon was the location for the second
meeting of the company's new Health and
Safety Committee. The members discussed the
company's accident statistics for the past three
years, conveyor safety, rail safety, employee safety
footwear, and the proposed safety guidance/alert
documentation.
Meanwhile, a new pre-tender checklist
for contractors was forwarded to all site
management. This is to ensure that all appropriate
contractor documentation, qualifications and
method statements are available for any contract
work being undertaken within Bord na Móna.
