eople who own their own homes often forget that a third of the population live in rented housing. In fact, in Britain there are over five million homes owned by housing associations and local councils. A team of staff need to be on hand to manage these houses, and provide the support and service the tenants need. This is where the housing profession comes in.
More than 150,000 people are employed in housing within the UK. Most of these work for local authorities and housing associations. However, housing jobs can also be found with housing trusts, co-operatives, voluntary organisations, the private sector and commercial
bodies, as well as public service departments. Housing offers a whole spectrum of careers: On-site For those seeking hands-on involvement, work will range from advising homeless people, allocating houses to tenants, collecting rents, managing repairs and performing standardised checks on houses. Organisation A team of behind-the-scenes financial planners are also needed, as well as staff to organise the renovation and development of old council houses. There are also jobs in administration, payroll, human resource-based positions and customer service roles.
A career in housing is suited to individuals with a genuine interest in
people’s living conditions. Work can sometimes be challenging, so strong communication, negotiation and organisational skills are essential. Understanding and adapting to the needs of people with diverse cultural backgrounds, special needs and the elderly is also key. With new skills and areas to explore, employees can expect that no two days at work will be the same. Qualifications The Chartered Institute of Housing offers a flexible and accessible range of courses for housing workers at all levels (www.cih.org/careers). NVQs are useful; however school leavers or graduates can gain valuable first-hand experience in the field by contacting local Councils for Voluntary Services, many housing professionals begin their careers volunteering at grassroots level.
