from the same surgical cut. The result of hernia correction
with a simultaneous Stoppa procedure and open surgical
simple prostatectomy was associated with wound
infection.26 Reducing surgical cuts can be associated
with a lower wound infection rate. A retrospective study
by Choi et al. showed that in 48 hernia repairs using the
preperitoneal approach with a 12-cm mesh, no hernia
recurrence was seen in comparison with the no-mesh
group.17 Our results suggest, over three years' of follow
up, the same beneficial impact of the mesh, with the second
benefit of having no additional surgical cut. In fact,
all recurrent hernias were detected within a year of the
initial operation. Very recently the robotic system has
been established to help speed the recovery of the
patient. In particular, in patients with morbid obesity
robotic surgery is the best strategy to give definitive
treatment.27,28 In the near future there is a hope that
robotic surgery will be easily optimized for simultaneous
prostatectomy and hernia repair.
Conclusion
Taking everything into the consideration, we can say that
our retroperitoneal polypropylene mesh insertion performed
simultaneously with prostatectomy is safe, effective
and practical. Our novel surgical technique has
excellent results with no noteworthy rise in operative duration
or further complications.
