he housing market can be
temperamental, with highs
and lows along the way, but
there are plenty of opportunities to
do well in this sector if you have an
interest in property whether you
want to sell, survey or inspect.

Estate agent
Gone are the days when estate
agents were the enemy of the
people - now good estate agents
are sought after, and because
you get commission if you have
the right communication skills,
you could do well out of it.
It's not just about showing
people around properties. Your role
will involve liaising with banks,
mortgage brokers, surveyors and
solicitors. You'll also be expected
to collect information about the
property, take photographs, estimate
the value and represent the sellers
when dealing with potential buyers.
What qualifications do I need?
You don't need a degree but an
HND or degree in business-related
studies, estate management or civil
or structural engineering may mean
you start higher up the ladder.
How much can I earn? Starting
salaries are £14,000 to £20,000;
in a senior role you can earn up
to £60,000 plus commission.

Commercial or
residential surveyor
Surveyors deal with all aspects
of residential and commercial
property, including sales, purchases,
leases or management. A key part of
the job includes assessing properties
and placing a value on them.
Surveyors don't just get involved
with existing properties. You
could also be asked to manage the
entire development of a property,
from greenfield stage through to
assessing the completed buildings.
What qualifications do I need?
You'll start as a trainee, and the most
direct route to becoming one is with
an undergraduate or postgraduate
degree accredited by the Royal
Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
There are also apprenticeship
schemes, which last two years and
will give you associate member
status with the Royal Institution
of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
How much can I earn? Trainees
start on £20,000 to £25,000, while
the average salary for experienced
surveyors is around £50,000.

Historic buildings
inspector
All about preserving buildings
from the past, this role would suit
somebody with a passion for history

and conservation. Your main role is
to visit sites and inspect and survey
historical buildings, liaising with
planning and development policy
makers on conservation issues,
finding out what public opinion is
about a building and planning and
supervising long-term projects.
You'll also be involved in legislation,
compliance and reporting your
findings. You're likely to start in a
local authority planning department.
What qualifications do I need?
You'll need a degree - preferably
in archeology or history,
architecture, planning, surveying
or building conservation.
How much can I earn?
Salaries typically start around
£25,000, rising to £36,000 with
experience. At senior level you
may earn up to £60,000.
