customers and communities we
serve, while minding one another's
safety, health and wellbeing, and
making strong progress towards our
purpose.
Over the past three months, as

commitment to ESB and our
customers during the past 12 months.
2021 has been another year of
living with a pandemic, bringing
challenges and uncertainty to our
personal and working lives.
Across ESB, despite the
challenges, you have shown huge
commitment and flexibility. You
I've been talking with people across
ESB, the most common question
relates to our strategy and how it
might have to adapt and evolve. Our
Brighter Future strategy gave us a
clear purpose and has served us well.
Being mindful that there have been
so many changes in our external
environment since 2017, it's now a
good time to take stock.
The UN's Sustainable
Development Goals provide a solid
foundation for our revised strategy.
Providing access to affordable,
reliable and sustainable energy
has always been part of ESB's
core purpose; building resilient
infrastructure is part of what we do;
and we have a unique opportunity
and a clear obligation to take urgent
action to combat climate change.
Together at ESB, we can make
a difference: delivering a Brighter
Future by creating and connecting
sustainable, reliable, affordable
energy; and by supporting the
customers and communities we
serve to achieve net zero. We will
communicate the new strategy in the
New Year.
In the meantime, this Christmas
edition of EM covers lots of positive
progress made throughout ESB this
year. There are some great stories
about the teamwork, tenacity and
ingenuity that people right across
the company have demonstrated in
the face of everything that 2021 has
thrown our way. It's also fantastic
to see how we've pulled together to
support many important charities
and initiatives outside ESB.
2021 has been a year of challenge,
change and growth. So, I hope that
you get the chance to take a break
over the holiday season, to rest,
recharge and connect with family or
friends.
It's been a year of particular
change for anybody who joined or
retired from ESB this year. If you
joined ESB this year, welcome.
While joining a new organisation
when you can't meet your fellow
team members must be particularly
challenging, I know you will be
made most welcome.
To those who retired during the year
- thank you for your service to ESB
and our customers. I'd particularly like
to thank Pat O'Doherty, who guided
us as Chief Executive for the past ten
years, and to wish him and all our
retired colleagues, all the very best for
the future.
And, although we can't gather
together right now, I hope the
features in this special edition of EM
can bring a sense of connection with
friends and colleagues across ESB.
Thank you for your part in ESB's
success story through 2021, for
supporting each other through all the
changes the pandemic has brought,
and for consistently delivering for
our customers and our purpose.
I look forward to working with you
in 2022.
