Top stories in brief Windows 7 upgrade The Microsoft Upgrades Programme covers an extensive set of improvements to IT tools which impacts most users in ESB in some way. Currently the Programme is concentrating on the rollout of Windows 7 as the deadline for Windows XP looms large. Safety Award for ESB Telecoms Ltd. ESB Telecoms Ltd. was presented with a Special Safety Award for achieving ten years free of LTIs. An insight into G&WM Lisa Browne Head of Marketing Electric Ireland receving the European Sponsorship Association Award for 'Best in Europe Sponsorship' in respect of Electric Ireland's sponsorship of Team Ireland for the London Olympics. The award was presented by Dominic Lyle, Director General of the European Association for Communication Agencies in London on January 29th last. See page 19 inside for full story. ESB TO INVEST €2M ANNUALLY INTO ENERGY FOR GENERATIONS 8 Energy for Generations Fund open for applications. ESB HAS LAUNCHED the 'Energy for Generations' fund, a new corporate responsibility investment which will see over €2 million per year disbursed across a range of community and issuesbased initiatives. Approximately €1 million per year will be dedicated to addressing issues relating to education, homelessness and suicide prevention. The remainder will be allocated across a range of initiatives including wind farm community funds, fuel poverty programmes and support for staff volunteering. ESB Chief Executive Pat O'Doherty launched the fund with support from students at St Patrick's Girls NS, Ringsend, one of the schools participating in the Time to Read Programme - an 'Energy for Generations' initiative in conjunction with Business in the Community. Speaking at the launch, Pat said: "As a leading Irish organisation with deep roots in the community dating back to 1927, we are ESB has been supporting initiatives in the areas of suicide prevention and homelessness since 2007 and is currently among the largest private funders of suicide prevention in Ireland. The Energy for Generations fund introduces a new focus on education, which recognises the need for educational supports at all levels to ensure that Ireland has the skills it needs to compete effectively in the future. The Energy for Generation Fund will target a range of measures across all educational levels, from primary to third level, including adult education. The 'Energy for Generations' fund is now open for applications from organisations working in the areas of homelessness, suicide prevention and education. Registered charities, not for profit organisations and community and voluntary groups may apply through the website, www.esb.ie. n As we move into a new year, EM talks with Paddy Hayes, Executive Director, Generation & Wholesale Markets, about the purpose, structure and key activities of this business unit. 45k deeds logged during Powering Kindness Week During Powering Kindness Week Electric Ireland offered to transform the good deeds of the public into a donation for charities, who benefit from every act of kindness completed during the week. Mount Lucas connection The 79.2MW Mount Lucas Wind Farm is being developed by Bord na Mona in the Bog of Allen near Edenderry, Co Offaly. The connection of this wind farm required the construction of a new looped 110kV station into the Thornsberry-Cushaling 110kV overhead line. Brewing up a storm Severe storms over the Christmas and New Year period severely impacted the national electricity networks. Successive wind and lightning storms occurred between December 18th, 2013 and January 6th, 2014.
