IT WAS ALL HANDS on deck for one team of apprentices who helped with the Peace Bridge illuminations for the Lumiere event in Derry-Londonderry.

Six NIE plant maintenance apprentices and two instructors helped to lay the cable for the 12 figures which were suspended in and around the bridge and illuminated during the festival.

The Lumiere festival took place over four nights in Derry from Thursday November 28th to Sunday December 1st last as part of the City of Culture celebrations. A total of 17 different installations were located in and around the city on both sides of the River Foyle, turning the city into one huge outdoor gallery.

Derek Curran, NIE apprentice instructor, said: “We were more than happy to come down and help out. It's a bit of a change from our day-to-day activities. We ran cables across the bridge as part of this big light installation which really helped transform the city”.

ESB Athletic Club update

The ESB AC has been able to look back on an incredibly successful 2013 for our members on the roads and courses around the country. We hope to replicate and improve on this in 2014.

WE HAVE SEEN our membership continue to expand as the popularity of running and fitness grips the nation and our Company. Membership for 2014 is now due and we ask all members to please forward your €20 to a member of the AC’s committee. €15 of this goes to the BHAA and €5 to ESB AC.

We are also massively interested in encouraging new members into the Club. The Club and BHAA race series caters for runners of all levels so whether you’re an elite athlete, someone who squeezes in a few miles during the week or just a complete novice with a New Year’s resolution, we would be delighted to have you.

Membership to the Club allows you access to our lunchtime runner’s email list, the ability to order our brand new technical running gear at a subsidised price and reduced entry price to the BHAA races.

Unlike many of the races around the country, the BHAA series are hosted by different companies at each event and are very relaxed, social occasions. The catering at the end of the run is always worth the effort. They are a great opportunity to mingle with other professionals and get to know colleagues from across ESB. As is tradition, we are currently in the cross country season and will be back on the roads in April next.

The ESB Athletic Club Home Page can be accessed from the ‘Sports and Social’ drop down list from the ESB main page on ESBNet or at the following link http://esbnet/athleticclub/. The FAQ’s section has been added recently but feel free to contact any member of the Club for more information.

THE 2013 Sustainability Awards were presented on the December 17th at a function in Head Office which was attended by over 70 staff. This year staff were invited to submit video entries of how sustainability is embedded in their location and there was a fantastic response with 36 entries submitted from across the company. Awards entries presented powerful stories about energy efficiencies, cost savings and water savings, covering the reuse of equipment and materials, showcased new ideas, technologies and solutions. In all cases there was a clear demonstration of embedded sustainable thinking and staff going the extra mile to deliver tangible benefits to the business and the environment.

Ardnacrusha Generating Station won the overall award for its submission, which highlighted increased station efficiency and an increased amount of energy traded as a result of a new running regime in the SEM.
