  • Thin Clients have a significantly longer life cycle, having an obvious impact on waste to the environment.
  • Each Thin Client uses 82% less materials to produce than a standard PC and they are 90% recyclable (compared to a PC or laptop which is 18% recyclable). Our 2,000 Thin Clients will produce 6.8 tons less of waste than the standard PC.

The environmental benefits of Thin Clients were recently recognised at the ESB Sustainability Awards when the Project picked up the Business Unit Sustainability Award for BSC & Electric Ireland.

HOW DEPLOYMENT WORKS

So far over 1,400 Thin Clients have been installed with a further 600 to be installed in the coming months. While almost 500 desktops and laptops have been upgraded or replaced, with a further 3,000 to be completed before Microsoft's April deadline.

On the day, a team from Tomorrow's World will take away your existing laptop or desktop and replace with it a new Thin Client or they will take away your existing laptop or desktop and replace with it a Windows 7 compatible desktop or laptop. Before leaving you, the team will ensure your new device is fully installed and connected to the network, that you can access your P and share drives, and that you know how to access the Software Centre where you can download your non-standard applications.

... any desktop or laptop that is no longer considered a viable device is donated to Camara, an international organisation dedicated to using technology to improve education and livelihood skills.

Specific dates for deployment of Thin Clients and replacement or upgrade of desktops and laptops will be communicated to you by your local business unit BP & IT team.

BENEFITS

“It was a great achievement, and really recognises the work the team have undertaken so far,” said Jim Dollard, Executive Director, BSC & Electric Ireland. “The selection of Thin Clients as the device of choice for office users wasn't purely on the basis of user benefits and economic considerations - the environmental benefits were also a huge contributing factor,” he added.

Additionally, any desktop or laptop that is no longer considered a viable device is donated to Camara, an international organisation dedicated to using technology to improve education and livelihood skills in disadvantaged communities. ITS ensure that all devices are wiped of data and applications before passing to Camara, who then load them with educational content that delivers digital literacy skills to students in disadvantaged schools in Ireland, Africa and the Caribbean. Almost 2,000 computers will be donated as part of this programme, helping to benefit nearly 42,000 students.

It is essential that prior to you receiving your new device or upgrade, you must ensure all business related data is backed up from the local C: hard drive to your shared drives and all personal data is removed from your C-drive.
