BERNIE HEALY

Editor's desk

Hello and welcome to the Feb/March edition of EM.

It's still not too late to wish all of you a very happy New Year and hopefully you survived the Christmas storms without damage or too much disruption. While the counties in the southern and western sea-boards seem to have taken most of the gale force winds, our Network colleagues travelled from other parts of the country to assist local crews in the areas most affected. Before during and after Christmas, our crews braved atrocious conditions to ensure supply was restored as quickly as possible to homes and businesses in these areas. Part of that great effort was also shared by staff back at the various depots, call centre and press office locations so well done to everyone involved. In this issue we carry a feature on some of the damage to lines and equipment from around the country.

Due to the unprecedented weather we also had regular safety messages, not just in relation to dangers around falling cables, but to remind road users of the dangers and challenges of driving in such conditions. This time it was also noticeable that many news items covered the danger to the public who went too close to cliffs and promenades to film or photograph the gigantic waves, not something everyone might realise was a perilous task. So stay safe and be seen for the duration of winter.

Kind regards

Partington Food Bank donation

IN DECEMBER Carrington CCGT site staff and contractors made a donation to local charity, Citizens Advice Bureau, Trafford who manage the Partington Food Bank in the UK. The money was collected from site staff over the past few months who had been ‘fined’ small amounts to encourage on-time arrival at site meetings and was topped up before Christmas to just over £1,500. All ESB project staff working on the Carrington project also contributed to this excellent local cause adding £285 to the pot.

A group of representatives from site visited the Food Bank premises to see the operation and to present the cheque. The Food Bank distributes around 150 bags of groceries and toiletries throughout Trafford each month. The cheque was presented to Dale Maskell, from Trafford CAB who said: “We are thrilled with this donation from the Carrington project team for our food bank initiative. It boosts our funding ahead of our Christmas food distribution allowing us to assist more at this costly time for families”.
