PAT O'DOHERTY, Chief Executive ESB, presented ESB Telecoms Ltd. (ESBT) with an Award for successfully achieving 10 years free from lost time incidents (LTIs). The safety of staff and contractors has always been a core value within ESBT.

Since the inception of the business ESBT has maintained an accident free record for over 10 years (3,890 accident free days to date). Currently safety is managed under Ronnie Horan, Infrastructure Manager, by a dedicated Safety Team consisting of Peter Gregg, Safety Manager; Wesley Hughes, Safety Officer and Razia Mohamed, Safety Administrator. Onsite safety is monitored by the ESB Telecoms Towers and Fibre Operational Teams, managed by Noreen O'Donovan and Paul Sweeney.

In addition, in October 2009 ESBT achieved OHSAS 18001 certification, covering our 500+ telecommunication sites and the National Telecoms Fibre Optic Network (NTFON) - this accreditation has been successfully retained on an annual basis.

The ESBT Safety Extranet was introduced in 2009 and is a web based contractor Safety Management System which is critical to our Safety management capability. The application was developed to allow contractors to submit online work submissions, maintain contractor records and to fulfil our legal requirement to allow our site safety files to be reviewed by qualified project supervisors.

Work submissions are rule based which take account of site risks and require a risk assessment to be completed. ESBT's site specific risk assessments are available for contractors to review and these are reassessed on an annual basis.

A comprehensive suite of safety guidelines, procedures and work aids help to ensure that work is undertaken safely on all ESB Telecom sites.

ESB Telecoms Ltd. strongly believes that quality behavioural audits are a key factor to ensuring that a safe working environment is maintained throughout our business. We are committed to continually review, monitor and improve our Safety Management Systems and are introducing an Electronic Access Control System during 2014.

The new innovative initiative consists of electronic keys and padlocks which are integrated with our Safety Extranet, authorisation to critical locks are issued when a PTW is issued.

ESB Telecoms Ltd. is delighted to receive this award and acknowledgement from the Chief Executive for achieving 10 calendar years free from LTIs.
