Looking back on my first full year as chief executive, it is useful to reflect on what has been a time of great challenge and change for ESB. Challenge as we continue to deal with a very difficult and uncertain economic environment and change as we look ahead to the future and introduce our new Corporate Strategy to 2025 and reaffirm what has always been our mission to bring sustainable and competitive energy solutions to all our Customers. A significant milestone for ESB during 2012 was our success in securing funding for Carrington power station in the UK. Our ability to raise finance for this project, and indeed our two successful bond issues in the second half of the year, reflect market confidence in ESB’s strategy and our ability to compete successfully going forward. Other highlights of the 2012 calendar include the sponsorship by Electric Ireland of the Irish Olympic Team in the London 2012 Olympics and the 25th Anniversary of ElectricAid in September. Both of these events reflected extremely positively on ESB and Electric Ireland and served to highlight our commitment over many years to corporate social responsibility. In August, our 85th Anniversary gave us an opportunity to review the huge contribution that ESB has made to Irish society since our establishment in 1927. Throughout the decades, and especially at times of recession, ESB has pushed the boundaries of innovation to trigger vital social and economic advances in Ireland. As we look ahead to the New Year and beyond, ESB continues to drive innovation in the electricity sector. Through our pioneering work in areas such as Smart networks, electric vehicles and renewable generation, we are helping to position Ireland as a global hub for green energy and clean tech industries. Although green shoots are beginning to emerge, our economy still faces serious challenges and we remain committed to working sympathetically with customers who are finding it difficult to make ends meet. Against this backdrop, we made considerable progress in cutting costs during the year, with €165m of annual savings already achieved out of a target of €280m by 2015. Although critical for the sustainability of our business, I recognise that this has required many sacrifices, including major reductions in staff numbers. We are sorry to see many longstanding colleagues leaving the organisation and I would like to thank them for their valuable contribution to ESB and wish them well in the future. On a particular note I want to send good wishes to our respected and valued colleague and friend John Campion who retired during the year. John played a key role in driving a sustainability agenda throughout ESB. We wish him every happiness in his retirement. As we prepare to celebrate Christmas with family and friends, we remember past colleagues and friends who are no longer with us, and our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones in 2012. I look forward to working with you all in the New Year to continue our vision to be Ireland’s foremost Energy Company competing successfully in the All Islands Market.
