BERNIE HEALY

Hello and welcome to the Christmas edition of EM

This is the first edition of our new slimmed down newspaper. However, the design is such that we will continue to bring you all the items of interest that you previously enjoyed in a shorter snappier way.

Unfortunately, we have had to drop some of our general lifestyle features, but we hope this doesn’t negatively affect your enjoyment of the paper.

For those of you who haven’t yet sent in your email address, and would like to receive a digital copy of EM, please forward to me at bernie.healy@esb.ie.

Can I take this opportunity to thank you all for your submissions throughout 2012 and to wish you and your loved ones a very happy Christmas and a healthy and successful New Year.

Kind regards

A new movie opened recently - a story by Jack Kerouac about young people hitch-hiking across the USA in the late ’40s. When I saw the poster for the movie, I was struck by the picture of an old American car, a Ford V8. When I joined the ESB in 1952, the Transport Depot had a number of these in which engineers like myself used to travel the length of Ireland. They were great big cars with no heater and no radio. Many the time I shivered on a long winter journey down from Donegal.

The then Chairman RF Browne used to be driven around in another big American car, a Hudson Terraplane. At some stage, he got another car and the Hudson was demoted to general use of the staff. Imagine my delight to find that it had a heater, a radio and soft-cloth upholstery!

Sean Linehan ex-Transmission Dept. 1952.

SPORTSCO Leisure Centre is a winner yet again!

SPORTSCO is a proud recipient of a 2012 White Flag quality award, achieving the gold standard this year, the 12th year it has won the award.

SPORTSCO General Manager Lorna Brady said, “This achievement is indicative of the level of service and facilities that are offered by SPORTSCO and are a credit to all staff”.

SPORTSCO also received awards in the ‘Disability Provision’ and ‘Training Ethos’ categories at the White Flag Gala Awards Dinner, which was held in the Killenard Golf and Spa Resort on Sunday October 18th. The awards were presented to SPORTSCO by Barry Walsh, President of the Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management, the professional body representing the Irish leisure industry.

There were 91 facilities who entered the auditing process this year, but only 86 received White Flag awards.

As part of the adjudacation process, facilities are subject to unannounced surveillance audits throughout the year to ensure that high quality standards are being maintained. The White Flag mark of excellence assures leisure facility users that the facility’s management has been independently assessed in the three key areas of safety, hygiene and customer service.

When choosing a leisure centre, always choose a facility which displays the White Flag service excellence symbol.

Popular SPORTSCO Cleaner nominated for National ICC Awards

Many of you will know, ‘Kathleen Gannon’ from SPORTSCO pictured above. Kathleen is renowned for her good humour and friendliness by all who have visited SPORTSCO over the past 20 years. Kathleen is employed by ISS Contract Cleaners and is the cleaning supervisor at the leisure facility and was recently nominated for the ‘Cleaner of the Year Award’ at the Irish Contract Cleaner Awards in the Burlington hotel on 19th October. SPORTSCO was also nominated for the National hospitality site of the year.

New Sustainability Committee appointed

Following the recent re-organisation, a new Sustainability Committee has been appointed. The committee, which is made up of representatives from each Business Unit, has an important role to play in ensuring good governance in relation to environmental management. It will also be working with managers to ensure that the principles of sustainable working and resource efficiency become further embedded in each area of our activity. The company’s sustainability strategy is being reviewed with a view to building on the progress made from 2008 to 2012 and the committee is involved in this process. The review, which will conclude in early 2013, will involve staff and managers throughout the business.

For more information on this visit the sustainability section of ESBNet.

Members of the Sustainability Committee:

Pat Naughton (Chairperson), Declan O’Brien, Gerry Mooney, Alan Daly, Gareth Davis, Marie Sinnott, Brian Ryan, Michael Ahearne, Louise Murphy, and Colm de Burca
