SPORTSCO introduces TRX training and its benefits

image shows a lady and a man using gym equipment.

TRX is the leading name in suspension training in Ireland. The beautiful thing about suspension training is that you control the intensity of the exercise as you use leverage and gravity to obtain the perfect workout, irrespective of you fitness levels - age, weight or experience.

With no isolated movements, a suspension trainer will get you a full-body workout every time – no more time wasted on small muscle groups that have very little over-all effect on your body. This isn’t bodybuilding, this is athletic training that works with how your body works. In essence, functional training at its best!

Whether you’re just beginning your journey into fitness or pushing towards your summit, TRX Training can give you a scalable, sustainable, fun, effective approach to help you achieve your personal best.

• TRX Training meets you where you are and takes you where you want to go, blurs the lines between training and play, strength and flexibility, and empowers you to be better at what you love.

• TRX Training uses versatile, scalable tools that anyone, anywhere can use any time to perform exercises that improve movement on the field or in life.

• TRX Training helps you apply the minimum dose of effort to get maximum results using only methods that work.

• TRX Training helps you become better at what you do, whatever you do, and keeps training fun.

TRX allows a low level of impact while delivering a dramatically superior core body workout, thus encouraging improved balance, agility and endurance. This can all be achieved as you develop greater strength without the addition of bulk. Because the workout targets your entire body, your metabolism gets a boost and fat is burned faster.

Thanking you all - ElectricAid’s 25th anniversary members’ draw

image shows the logos of tall the charities that have benefitted.

A SPECIAL members’ draw was a centrepiece of ElectricAid’s 25th Anniversary Celebrations. We thought of it as a way of saying ‘thank you’ to our 2,600 current members and to those who have gone before them. The idea was simple – to allow 25 of our members direct €1,000 each of ElectricAid funding to a charitable cause of their choice. We have had great feedback from members and our 25 winners have been genuinely excited about being able to be of significant service to their chosen charity. Many chose to split their award into two €500 components.

In the current economic climate, it came as no surprise that many of the awards were to charities, local and national, in Ireland. The range was breathtaking – from the welfare of children in Namibia, to the welfare of donkeys in Cork – from a local elder care unit in Cavan, to the global work of Amnesty International. Childrens’ welfare and education in Namibia and children with dyslexia in Mayo also both benefited. The draw has been a major success, has been very well received by our members and supporters. We thank in particular Peter Brady of Group Internal Audit and Cormac Gordon, formerly of ElectricAid, for their great work on the draw.

Putting Merrion Square in lights!

Merrion Square opens its doors for Christmas with festive lighting and a unique shopping experience.

Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar turned on a new Christmas Light display sponsored by ESB at Merrion Square Park on Monday 26th November. The event marked the launch of “Christmas on the Square” which will include a one-day special pop-up Christmas design shop and shopping trail to draw more people to the Square during the festive season and build on recent initiatives in the area.

The pop-up shop will showcase the best of Irish-designed gifts and artisan food, and is a collaboration between the Merrion Square Innovation Network and the Irish Design Shop. The shop will open for one day only on Saturday December 1st in the splendid surroundings of the Irish Architectural Archive at No. 45 Merrion Square and there will be special seasonal treats for shoppers including beautiful choral music during the day.

The success of this year’s “Merrion Square Initiative”, which is aimed at “awakening” and promoting the area as a unique and vibrant cultural destination and tourist attraction, provides a model which could be used to regenerate other areas in the future.

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar TD, brother and sister Cameron(10) and Isabel (6) Singh from Castleknock, Brid Horan, Executive Director ESB BSC and Electric Ireland and Mary King, Policy and Planning Officer Failte Ireland.

Minister Varadkar said huge progress has been made in building awareness of Merrion Square as a destination. “Merrion Square is a special part of Dublin with an important Georgian heritage, but in the past it has often been overlooked by tourists and by Dubliners themselves. It looks like the ongoing awareness campaign is working, and events like this one today are part of that process. I’m particularly pleased that since the initiative was launched, many of the Georgian buildings in the Square have opened their doors to the public for the first time,” he said.

Launched in August, the initiative has already inspired dozens of diverse cultural events on Merrion Square this year, bringing visitors to rediscover the square through art, science, culture, literature, food, music, history, architecture and family activities. Facilitated by Fáilte Ireland, the initiative is a project led by the Merrion Square Innovation Network, and culminates with a Christmas celebration on the Square this December.

Last year the museums and institutions on Merrion Square attracted 1.6 million visitors and while there are no numbers for 2012 available yet, Fáilte Ireland believes that this figure will have increased.

ESB Cricket Team Season 2012

image shows an old photo, it shows the Cricket team of the time and they are all waring white jumpers and smiling towards camera.
Above is an 1980 plate winning ESB Cricket Team. There are a few old familiar faces in it, sadly one or two that are no longer with us. May I thank Bernie Brennan for forwarding the picture to me. The photo was taken in Pembroke CC in around July/August 1980. Pictured are: Back Row (l-r): Tony Connell, John Kelly, Tommy McGibney, Liam Rooney, Unknown and Frank Malin. Front Row: (l-r) Willie Webster, Shay Costelloe, Derek O Herlihy, Roy Chapman, Dr John Cunningham and Terry Purcell.

THE SEASON closed on the ESB cricket team in late August and, though it was not a good summer weather-wise, we made the most of it. The team prepared well with a number of pre-season training sessions held in St Mary’s School Hall in Rathmines and also at the Civil Service CC.

A team took part in the Willie Webster Trophy, a 20-over competition played in Civil Service CC. Each team played three games in a league format and we were in the same division as Air Corps, Terenure Walnuts and Gravediggers. We only played one league game as bad weather cancelled the ties against Diggers CC and Air Corps. We were defeated by Terenure by 8 wkts - ESB scored 77 all out, Terenure got 78 for loss off 2 wickets.

We won friendlies against AIB and Bank of Ireland CC. Michael Aherne and Michael Carroll played two memorable innings with two other friendlies against the Diggers and Garda CC resulting in two more victories for the ESB team. Unfortunately, six other games were cancelled due to bad weather.

Looking ahead to 2013, two or three of our current squad are taking early retirement so if any other staff members fancy taking up the game please contact: Tony Connell: Email: Anthony.connell@esb.ie or Ext 27602, or 087 9620867.

On behalf of everybody associated with the club, may we wish our club president, TP Morrissey, a long and healthy retirement from the company. Tom assures us that he will continue in his role as president and we thank him for all his hard work throughout the seasons. Merry Christmas on behalf of ESB CC.
