Targeting future growth in Malaysia

A jubilee event in Kuala Lumpar was hosted by Irish Ambassador to Malaysia, HE Declan Kelly, and was attended by the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Joe Costello TD, and the veteran sports broadcaster Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh. The 25 year occasion brought together senior officials from the Malaysian energy sector with Irish business leaders and diplomats, who were also in Malaysia for the Asia Pacific Ireland Business Forum.

At the Asia Pacific Business Conference, Ollie presented insights into doing business in Asia and 11 Irish ambassadors were in attendance, marking the importance of this event in facilitating discussions to support business growth. ESBI’s visit to the region included meetings with Malaysian energy provider Tenaga National, power company Malakoff Corporation and Malaysia Development.

ESBI staff working in Kulim High Tech Business Park also marked the occasion with a staff event that was hosted by senior management from ESBI and waseld on the same weekend as the Asian Gaelic Games in Kuala Lumpur. ESBI sponsors the Arabian Celts GAA Club based in Bahrain and the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. The winners of the Men’s A final of the Asian Gaelic Games, 2012 were the Singapore Gaelic Lions.

ESB INTERNATIONAL has worked on a wide range of training and consultancy projects in Vietnam over the past 25 years and is currently acting as owner’s engineer on the second phase of a 1,200MW coal plant at Hai Phong on behalf of the Institute of Energy.

Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam His Excellency Mr Hoang Trung Hai, Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs Joe Costello, TD, and veteran Irish sports commentator, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh were among the guests of honour at the event in Hanoi to mark the silver jubilee.

During the 1990s, Deputy Hai was one of a group of Vietnamese executives sponsored by ESB to train programme at University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin. Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh’s late brother, Paddy Moriarty, was a former chief executive of ESB and was one of the key people involved in arranging the sponsorship.

Speaking at the jubilee event, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the contribution that ESBI has made to the electricity sector in Vietnam, noting that since the company’s first assignment there in the mid-1980’s, there has been a twelve fold increase in installed generation capacity.

ESB International looks forward to a bright future in Asia and welcomes the challenge of growing business in these valuable markets.
