Fergal Egan, Smart Energy Technologies ESB.

DURING 2012, EURELECTRIC engaged McKinsey & Co to work with the Utility sector and develop an Innovation Action Plan that would highlight the most critical areas from where new revenue growth could be found by the Utility sector across Europe over the period out to 2030. The Innovation Action Plan was launched in Brussels in May and a series of events were scheduled for each member country. The Irish event took place in the Science Gallery Trinity College on Wednesday, September 18th, last.

Eurelectric's Action Plan calls for a more integrated and systems-based approach to innovation in the energy sector where technical, commercial and market related matters are considered together in order to best enable the adoption of new energy technologies and business models. The plan also identifies the key role for public-private partnerships in the development of large-scale demonstrations and highlights the many opportunities that will emerge in the ‘new downstream’ sectors of distributed generation, integrated storage and services to customers in the home.

...the areas where Ireland lags behind is in the area of broadband speeds and and business services

Fergal Egan, Smart Energy Technologies ESB, presented on Ireland's innovative strengths in comparison to other European countries and other global economies. While some global reports position Ireland within or just outside the top ten most innovative economies, the areas where Ireland lags behind is in the area of broadband speeds and online publishing and business services. Fergal also presented on a number of ESB's innovation initiatives which aim to benefit not only the energy sector and customers but also the wider economy. “By leveraging from our network and in collaboration with industry partners, ESB is developing an electric vehicle charging infrastructure and smart grid as well as rolling out fibre broadband to midsized towns around Ireland,” Fergal Egan commented.
