SIEMENS' VISIT TO ESB NETWORKS

JERRY O'SULLIVAN, MD ESB Networks, recently hosted a group of 16 senior Siemens Executives who were visiting Dublin, looking at various companies’ experience in adapting to digital transformation trends.

In his key-note address to the group, Jerry conveyed ESB Networks’ experience integrating new technologies and our plans for further developments. The smart networks programme for operating assets, intelligent network, remote grid observation, along with smart metering and the ecars initiative, was presented. As the Siemens Executives come from a wide range of the business backgrounds wider than the electricity business, ESB Networks’ experience in leveraging the benefits of information technology and the integrated SAP platform for the management and delivery of work was also of great interest.

The presentation was followed by a lively and open discussion on the impact and challenges for companies like ESB Networks and Siemens in adapting to the changing technological and economical environments.

The feedback from the group was extremely positive. The programme coordinator stated: “The group was particularly impressed with the Irish ability to adapt and reinvent themselves when necessary. The way ESB has managed to drive business - despite the economic climate - by focusing on modern IT, consulting services and change management were great learnings. They especially liked ESB's pioneering role in smart metering, the smart networks initiative and the PowerCheck application, which provides real-time service interruption information at someone's fingertips.”

THE HISTORY OF ESB TRANSPORT

» The evolution of ESB's fleet of vehicles throughout the decades has been an intriquing one

By Tony Wall

THIS YEAR MARKS the tenth anniversary of the opening of the fleet and equipment offices and workshop in Tallaght, Dublin. To mark the occasion a permanent display of old photographs of ESB Transport through the years has been created in the building. The photographs depict scenes of ESB Transport from the 1930s to the ‘80s. Mounted on large board, they are a striking image of times past and tell a fascinating story.

THE FIRST VEHICLES

According to Dublin City and County vehicle registration records, the first mention of the ‘Electricity Supply Board’ was in the latter quarter of 1927. Here, for the first time, the company is mentioned. Registration ZI 687 was assigned to the ESB at 60-62 Upper Mount Street. The registration was in relation to a blue ‘Hupmobile Six’ car. The Hupmobile was a large car from
