Editor's desk

Hello and Welcome to the latest issue of EM.

One of the most wonderful documentaries I have seen was a preview of a new major TV series, The Secret Life of the Shannon. From the first seconds of the opening scene this was gripping footage and is up there with some of the great wildlife documentaries filmed in Africa and other continents. The photography is absolutely superb and it is hard to believe that the sunrises and sunsets were actually filmed in Ireland. That said, it took over two years to film due to the bad summers we have experienced over the past couple of years.

Technology has improved to such a huge extent that we can now capture remarkable underwater footage slowed down by 40 times. Crossing the Line, a small Wicklowbased company, has filmed all over the world and this two-part series for RTÉ will leave viewers spellbound and have you looking at the Shannon in a totally new light. Congratulations to Producer John Murray and his team on an excellent piece of work. We carry a feature in this issue on the making of the documentary.

Congratulations also to the organisers of the annual Sligo Walk, which this year celebrated its 50th anniversary. The event, which draws staff, both current and retired, from all parts of the country is memorable, not just for the walk, but for the marvellous weekend it turns out to be, year on year. In this issue we bring you memorable images from the event.

Kind regards,
