» ESB International continues to make strides in international and home markets and here is a summary of the recent contract wins.
South Africa Trade Delegation
• A Trade delegation from South Af rica visited Derrybrien Wind Farm followed by presentations on Re- newables in Stephen Court on April 26th 2013.
International Operations
• Northern Ireland: Contract Commencement Meeting for NIE H V Station Engineering Consultancy Framework took place in Belfast on April 16th.
• Bahrain: Electricity and Water Au thority, Bahrain have awarded ESBI a contract for design and supervision consultancy services of the upgrade to the Electricity and Water National Control Centre in Bahrain. ESBI team mobilised to Bahrain at the end of April for initial meetings on the project for the system control centre emergency upgrade.
Project Spotlight
• The Carrickmines Pottery Road circuit was switched into the Car rickmines 110kV GIS station April 1th/14th, as part of the larger Car rickmines GIS Project.
• Cigre Technical Brochure No 532 - Sub-station Uprating & Upgrading was published at the end of April. Hugh Cunningham was the ESBI contributor. Briefing documents for the ten-year inspection of the Shannon Generation Hydro Dams were completed by Brendan Haugh and his team on April 19th.
• Turlough Hill Administration Building Project led by Judith Doherty to upgrade the Administration Building successfully reached completion at the end of April.
• Completion of the civil works contract for Boula pumphouse, which is being constructed to prevent flooding on the River Shannon.
• The Carrickatane Wind Farm has now completed its reliability runs and is in commercial operation with a signed Take Over Cert from Siemens on April 18th.
• Wind Energy Solutions, has determined the average wind speeds at all of ESB's planned wind farm sites, assisting in the decision-making process, as these sites transition from the concept phase to capital approval.
• Gas Pipeline Project progressing well in Carrington with the crossing of Manchester road completed by micro-tunnel and pipe installed. Horizontal directional drilling required to lay the next section of the gas pipeline commenced on site on April 26th.
Herbert Park Hotel goes electric with new ecar charge point
» Herbert Park Hotel has joined a network of accredited Green Hotels across Ireland by having two electric vehicle charge point installed on site, in association with ESB ecars.
THE CHARGE POINTS add to over 70 now installed under the Green Hotel Drive, a partnership between ESB ecars, Fáilte Ireland and the Environmental Protection Agency to provide electric vehicle (EV) charge points to hotels nationwide.
These charge points form part of the national EV charge-point roll-out by ESB as well as supporting the development of green tourism in Ireland.
The Herbert Park charge points were installed as part of a recent initiative in which visiting EU delegates were transported in 100% electric Nissan LEAFs. Hotels like the Herbert Park Hotel are an ideal location, as electric car drivers can recharge during an overnight stay or while visiting the hotel for meetings.

NOVUSMODUS INVESTMENT ENABLES NEW WIND FARMS

ESB NOVUSMODUS has led a funding round of up to £6.75 million in Aveil-lant, whose 3D Holographic Radar prevents wind turbines from interfering with airport radar. The investment will enable Aveillant to prove, manufacture, ship and install units of its Holographic Radar, bringing the company into full-scale commercial operation. Further demonstrations at Prestwick and Glasgow airports are expected in coming weeks, in addition to the long-term development system at Cambridge Airport.
Wind turbine clutter is one of the largest obstacles holding back wind development in the UK. Today, there is more energy capacity being held up in the planning process because of aviation radar issues than is deployed on the ground. This significant funding represents a vote of confidence by investors that Aveillant’s technology will become the mainstream solution to wind turbine clutter, potentially unlocking many wind farm developments, while allowing for safe and reliable operation of airport primary surveillance radar.
Aveillant’s 3D Holographic Radar seamlessly integrates with existing airport radar and allows it to distinguish between aircraft and turbines, thus eliminating potentially dangerous clutter from controllers’ screens.
The round was led by ESB Novusmo-dus. The round also includes significant further funding from existing investors DFJ Esprit and Cambridge Consultants. In another show of confidence, the Aviation Investment Fund Company Limited (AIFCL), an organisation set up to provide financial support for programmes outlined in DECC's (Department of Energy and Climate Change) Aviation Plan, is converting its loans to Aveillant into equity in the company.
Successful development of the Aveillant technology should be of significant benefit to ESB's wind development team, as it will unlock a number of sites that would otherwise be unviable. Greencoat Capital (the fund adviser to ESB Novusmodus) has also been working with the ESB team on evaluating a number of other novel wind technologies.
ESB INTERNATIONAL REACHES MAJOR MILESTONE IN TANZANIA

THE SUBSTANTIAL BENEFITS of Tanzania's rural electrification are quickly being realised as across the country communities are being connected to the grid for the first time. ESB International has been delivering engineering consultancy services to a project which aims to advance the long-term development of the energy infrastructure, and thereby improve the quality of the lives of the people of Tanzania since 2008. The switching in of the new interconnector between Tanzania and Zanzibar marks a major milestone in this exceptional project.
Tanzania's electricity power supply is incredibly unreliable, with only 15% of the population connected to the national grid. Wholly-funded by the US government, the MCA-T Energy Project aims to ensure the long-term development of power transmission and distribution networks in Tanzania for future generations. The infrastructure developments are having a direct impact on people's lives by helping to stimulate economic growth and improve levels of education.
Ollie Brogan, Managing Director of ESB International, John Ashley, Project Director, ESB International, and John Shine, outgoing Deputy Chief Executive at ESB, attended a ceremony marking the switching in of the new interconnector at The State House Zanzibar on April 10th. The tangible benefits of the new interconnector will help to support the developing tourism industry in Zanzibar where, up until now, frequent power cuts have resulted in the reliance on expensive back up diesel generators.
ELECTRIC CARS FOR DUBLIN EU ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY MINISTERS' SUMMIT AS PART OF IRELAND'S EU PRESIDENCY
ESB FACILITATED THE provision of electric cars to transport some visiting delegations during the EU Environment and Energy Ministers meetings at Dublin Castle, as well as other events during the Presidency.
The 100% electric Nissan LEAFs were supplied by Windsor Motors in Deansgrange, Co. Dublin.
