ESB ECARS LEADING THE WAY IN EU-FUNDED GREEN EMOTION ELECTROMOBILITY PROJECT

GREEN EMOTION (GeM) is the largest electromobility research project funded by the EU with 43 partners from industry, the energy sector, electric vehicle manufacturers, municipalities, as well as universities and research institutions. There are currently four Irish partners in the project, including Trinity College Dublin, Cork City Council, CODEMA, as well as ESB ecars who is a leading partner in the project.

The aim of the project is to develop and demonstrate a commonly accepted, user-friendly framework for the deployment of electric vehicles through out Europe. The e-taxi which has to date covered over 60,000km on the streets of Dublin, as well as the very successful Fully Charged 2012 EV summit that was hosted by ESB ecars last year, are part of the EU Green eMo-tion project.

ESB ecars is leading a number of tasks and submitting reports on:

• Planning of the extent and allocation of charging infrastructure

• Tests of EV fleet management and per formance

• Pan-European requirements on EV recharging infrastructure including in stallation and operation

As well as the dissemination tasks with the responsibility for:

• Coordination of information and knowledge transfer between the pro ject and external stakeholders

• Coordination of special events in the project demonstration regions to pro mote the work being done within the project.

ESB ecars involvement in the project is also helping to increase awareness internationally of the work being carried out in Ireland to roll out electric vehicle charging infrastructure. There are now over 1,300 home, public and commercial charge points installed throughout Ireland.

SPONSORED BY IRISH AID, the inaugural Young Scientists Tanzania competition and exhibition was held in Dar es Salaam during October 2012. The event, modelled on the Young Scientists and Technology Exhibition in Ireland, saw over 350 students from 100 schools and teachers from all corners of Tanzania participating in the exciting event to showcase their projects across four categories. ESB International engineers Orla Burke and Edwina O'Callaghan were among the judges for the competition in the Technology and Chemical Physical and Mathematical Sciences categories.

ESB International proudly sponsored a Special Award for the Best Renewable Energy project, which was won by the Fidel Castro School from Pemba Island, Zanzibar. The winning project, entitled ‘The Potential of Wind Power in Pemba', was chosen based on the student's demonstration of methodology, innovation and their strength in communication. The three winning students were Rashid Abeid, Issa Mohammad and Fatma Juma.

In April, MCA-T Project Director John Ashley visited Pemba with Orla Burke and Edwina O'Callaghan to present the students and their teacher with their prize money and ESB International corporate gifts for the school. Pemba, known as the ‘Green Island’ is home to approximately 300,000 people and is located 50km east of mainland Tanzania. The students of the Fidel Castro School were delighted to welcome ESB International and proudly brought the visitors on a tour of their newly renovated school. ESB International is looking forward to sponsoring the competition again in 2013 and awarding the next innovative winners of the Renewable Energy award.

WHEELS COURIERS, a Dublin based, nationwide courier company, is trialling a 100% electric Renault Kangoo ZE van in Dublin city as part of ENEVATE, an EU-funded project. The trial aims to assess the viability of light commercial electric vehicles in a city centre locations. It is run in conjunction with the Department of Transport Engineering at Dublin Institute of Technology and ESB installed a charge point and smart meter at Wheels Couriers’ Dublin office. Data collected as part of the trial will be used to assess the potential fuel and maintenance cost-savings a company could experience by going electric.

This pilot trial is part of a European Union ‘INTERREG IV-B’ funded project called ‘ENEVATE'. The aim of the ENEVATE project is to rapidly boost innovation and competitiveness of the expanding electric vehicle sector in northwest Europe and contribute to the environmental challenge of reducing European CO2 emissions.
