THE FINALSOFTHE ESB GAA Annual 7s, which took place this year in Derry to celebrate the 2013 UK Culture Capital and the ‘Oakleaf’ city proved to be an excellent venue in this regard. The games were played in the superb sports grounds and facilities of St. Columb's College on the Buncrana Road.

Eight locations, including Cavan, Electric Ireland, NIE (2) and ESBI participated in the men's competition where the finals were contested between Naas and NIE (1) and ESBI and Electric Ireland competed in the ladies’ event.

Naas defeated Dundalk 4-3 to 0-3 in their semi-final and NIE (1) defeated last year's champions EirGrid by 3-4 to 1-3 in the other semi-final. The final score was NIE (1) 2-4 to Naas's 0-5. Laoch an Lae was awarded to Raymond Treanor of NIE (1).

NIE (1): David Stephenson (captain), Conall Donnelly, Raymond Treanor, Niall Cassidy, Conor Mulholland, Johnny Reynolds, Darren Molloy, Barry McAleer, Donal Kennedy. Naas: Conor Davis, Ciaran Heavey, Frank Finn, David Faulkner, John Whelan, Liam Cannon, Brian Kelly, Paul Mallon.

At the event were guests from Derry GAA, Co. Board Chairman, GAA Liaison Officer to the City of Culture committee John Keegan, and Mark Higgins. The cup was presented to the ladies’ captain by Derry senior football county captain Mark Lynch. Lord Mayor of Derry Kevin Campbell and his wife Deirdre were also present, as was NIE MD Joe O'Mahony, Financial Director Mary Collins, Construction Director Con Feeney and Plant Manager of Coolkeeragh Power Station Alan Campbell. ESB GAA's next outing is against Bord Gais to compete for the now annual Energy Cup and that fixture will take place later in the year, with time and venue yet to be decided.

In the ladies’ game, despite a promising start by Electric Ireland’s Rose Griffin scoring a great point in the opening seconds, it proved not to be enough to overcome a very experienced ESBI ladies side.

ESBI’s Eileen Morgan was the undisputed winner of the Laoch an Lae.

ESBI ladies: Ciara Dolan (captain), Eileen Morgan, Caroline Gallagher, Orlaith Harney, Pauline O’Callaghan, Claire Mulholland, Sandra Howard. Electric Ireland: Shauna Brady, Rose Lynch, Josephine Marley, Claire Morrison, Valerie Hanley, Mary Monroe, Vera Little.

ON MAY 3RD, outgoing Deputy Chief Executive Johnny Shine and Executive Director Generation & Wholesale Markets Paddy Hayes hosted a visit to ESB Head Office by a British delegation headed by Michael Fallon, the UK Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change. The Minister was in Dublin to attend the Informal Competitiveness Council event being held under the auspices of the Irish Presidency of the European Union. Discussions between the British and ESB delegations covered a broad range of areas, including the ongoing UK Electricity Market Reform process (EMR), ESB's plans for its recent investment in Carrington, and the issues surrounding a potential UK/Irish intergovernmental agreement on the trading of renewable energy. Commenting, Johnny Shine said: “With the advent of the single all-Islands electricity market across both Britain and Ireland, what happens in the UK will become increasingly important for the future of ESB. This visit represented a superb opportunity for us to engage with British policy-makers at the highest levels and it also reflects our company's growing importance to the UK electricity scene.”
