His appointment to this highly influential body reflects the international profile of ESB Networks’ expertise in smart networks development and is a significant opportunity to influence European R&D agendas and smart grid direction, over the coming years. The ETPs were established in late 2003 in response to the EU’s call for industry-lead forums to identify specific key research priorities in areas where there is both a need for solutions and the potential to boost European competitiveness, economic growth and employment. Over the past decade the ETPs have grown in their role and stature as R&D strategy and effective resourcing have come to be necessary for European recovery. These sector specific bodies develop strategic research agendas (SRAs) which address the technical and non-technical barriers to a critical mass of innovation. The ETPs are widely acknowledged to heavily influence the allocation of EU funding and promote partnerships (PPPs) and private investment programmes (PIPs). EU Framework Programme (FP) funding has delivered nearly €70m in R&D funding over the past 10 years. With a budget of over €80m for 2014-2020, the role of the current ETPs Steering Committee, Jerry O'Sullivan, MD ESB Networks Ltd, who was recently appointed to European Technology Platform. on which Jerry now sits, will be to advise the EU as to where this resource will prove most effective. As FP funding is generally matched by other public or private funds, the ETPs also have a key role in mobilising private finance for projects. ETP membership reflects industry-wide stakeholders with relevant insight into the devel- opmental needs of the industry and a clear dedication to its sustainability and success. Jerry’s appointment is a valuable recognition of the leadership and commitment of ESB Networks to Smart Network development and recognition of ESB Networks’ international record of delivery and technical expertise. ■ Tullamore Special Achievement, 5000 days since last Lost Time Incident (LTI) lamore CS Kevin Scally, on behalf of the staff was presented with an Excellence in Safety certificate by John McManus (CSM Dublin North) 5000 days, or almost 14 years without an LTI is a very special achievement that is a source of pride to Tullamore staff, both serving and retired. Tullamore Depot which has a staff of more than 30, is one of only a few locations to achieve this milestone. The achievement was made possible by the great team spirit of all the staff in Tullamore.
