BILLY WHYTE

William (Billy) Whyte, late Carrick-on-Shannon Area Supervisor, passed away on Thursday July 12th.

Billy was instrumental in bringing the Area Supervisor group into the ESBOA and when Job Evaluation was introduced he served on the joint working parties.

Billy joined ESB in 1937 and served in Sligo, Castlerea, Swinford and Ballaghadereen, where he met and married Marion Hanley. They have six children.

His last move was to Carrick, a town that then boasted 400 consumers. When rural electrification concluded two decades later, the numbers in his area had ballooned to 14,000 in five counties.

Like many of his colleagues throughout the country, Billy was active in the community and he took his local involvements as seriously as he did his chosen profession. He was both President and Captain of the Shannon Golf Club and Chairman of the Rowing Club. He was a founder member of the Carrick Branch of the Inland Waterways Association and was a member of the Shannon Boat Rally Committee. In 1976, as Commodore of the Rally, he lead it with his cabin cruiser – the body and engine of which he designed and built by himself.

Billy is survived by his sons Barry, Derek and Jim, and his daughters, Nollaig, Carol and Emer. We send our sincerest condolences. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

The winning women
The Electric Ireland Ladies team who defeated ESBI in Athlone.

A VERY entertaining final with some lovely passages of football and some fine individual displays from both sides at the recent ESB GAA 7’s. EirGrid was the sharper team throughout and was well led by their Captain Brendan Kelly and the ever elusive John Guckian. NIE tried their best with good performances from Eoin Maguire and Marty McManus and kept in the hunt for most of the game. EirGrid’s capability for getting goals at the right time proved to be the decisive factor in securing them their first final victory in this competition on a final scoreline of 4-11 to 1-8.

Teams: EirGrid - Ronan Keating, Colm McManus, John Guckian, Adrian Kdelly, Michael Gavin, Michael Burke, Arthur Monaghan, Padraig Coghlan, Raymond Dorney and Brendan Kelly (Capt) and Michael Coone (Manager).

NIE:- Marty McManus Capt., Brendan McDevitt, Brendan McGrade, Ciaran McCormack, Eoin Maguire, Liam Duggan, Niall Cassidy, Paddy McConville and Anto Finnegan. Manager – Kieran McCoy.

A special thanks must go to all teams who participated and full credit must be given to Athlone GAA Club for the immaculate condition of their pitches, dressing rooms and their overall facilities. At a presentation dinner later that evening in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone the winning teams were presented with the ESB Cup and trophies by ESB GAA Club President Paul Stapleton and ESB GAA Chairman, Colum Grogan. Colum Grogan welcomed NIE MD Joe O’Mahony and senior manager Con Feeney who were also in attendance.
