Facts: Endangered places

• The Dead Sea is at risk of becoming drained in the near future due to water from the River Jordan, which used to flow into it, being diverted away for use as drinking water. The famous lake has sunk over 80 feet (25 metres) in the past 40 years and continues to lose about a metre (four feet) of water every year; nestled in between Jordan, Israel and the West Bank, the Dead Sea already sits in the lowest place on earth.

• Once the site of 150 different glaciers, it is predicted that by 2020 the National Glacier Park in Montana will be glacier-free due to climate change. At the moment only 25 of the 150 glaciers remain.

• Of the Atlantic Forest which originally spanned 520,000 square miles in Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay, only 7% of the species-rich forest remains today due to logging expansion in the area.
