BERNIE HEALY
Hello and welcome
October/November edition of EM.
One of the positive things that emerged from the recession period is the vast number of communities that are holding local events as a way of bringing in visitors, encouraging local spending and promoting their villages and towns.
Unfortunately, the weather this summer wasn’t ideal for many of these events but it didn’t deter the organisers and supporters from going ahead. This is something that has been very successful in other countries, particularly in the UK, and can be also a great attraction for tourists and locals alike. It is also a great way of bringing communities together, something that was probably lacking during the Celtic Tiger years.
With many people holidaying at home, events like these are terrific for families and children. If any of you were involved in organising such initiatives, do let us know and we will be happy to share your ideas and experiences with your colleagues.
Maybe you have ideas for Christmas events that you would also like to share. These events could be part of fund-raising initiatives for charities or local causes, so do let us know.
Kind regards

Letters to the editor
RECENTLY A PROPERTY owned by my wife that had been rented out to a couple was found to be in fact a ‘grow house’ resulting, as you can imagine, in significant damage being done to the property. This had been a very stressful time for my wife and myself and the task of renovating the property back to habitable state was daunting to say the least. At this time a major concern had been to have the electricity reconnected to the property to get some renovation works started. This was always going to be a difficult task as the mains incoming had been tampered with by the tenants in the property.
For this re-connection I dealt with two members of ESB, Bernard O’Connell the Area Foreman I believe and another engineer working with him whom I cannot remember his name at this time. Both men were an absolute pleasure to deal with, no drama was made of the situation and a very clear attitude of just getting the house reconnected and getting it back right was clear to be seen. The engineer who actually reconnected the power I believe actually came to do the job on the way to visit his child in hospital. I felt it is was important that the efforts and conduct of both was noted as so often bad press is put out but rarely do we hear of such good and gracious work.
Sincere thanks for their time and efforts on this hopefully we will never need to call them again!
Regards,
Name and address with Editor.

Fatal injury to contractor
On Monday 24th September last a timber pole which was being erected by two contractors came in contact with a live 10kV line. The crew were employed by a poling contractor working for ESB Networks. Banks man in the crew, John Geraghty from Loughrea area, sustained fatal injuries while his colleague, digger driver Martin Naughton was severely traumatised but was otherwise thankfully uninjured. ESB Networks ceased all non emergency poling activities temporarily following the incident and has commenced a detailed investigation together with a separate HSA investigation. ESB Chief Executive, Pat O’Doherty, and MD ESB Networks Ltd., Jerry O’Sullivan, extended their condolences to the Geraghty family. Our thoughts are with them at this sad time.
