ESBI PUNCHED significantly above its weight at the Paris CIGRÉ Session in August where five out of eight papers accepted from Ireland were authored by ESBI staff.

The biennial CIGRÉ Paris Session is a premier event in the international electricity sector calendar, bringing together more than 6,000 senior executives, experts and specialists to share knowledge on new developments and innovations among members of the international council on large electrical systems. This year’s event, the 44th session, hit new records in terms of the number of delegates and exhibitors at the accompanying trade show. While historically CIGRÉ has focused on the generation and transmissions sectors, it is increasingly encompassing distribution in recognition of the blurring of the distinction between transmission and distribution following the widespread use of embedded generation.

ESBI Head of Engineering Mick Mackey commented: “Given the very large number of papers submitted to the session each year, the number of papers accepted from Ireland, and in particular ESBI, is a huge achievement and demonstrates our expertise in electricity transmission and distribution.”

Short video presentations by each of the authors discussing their papers will be broadcast on the ESBI blog www.energyinnovation.ie over the coming weeks.

The ESBI papers accepted by CIGRÉ include:

  • The Cork Harbour 220kV Submarine Cable Project - Robert Donaghy.
  • Developing a Roadmap for Introduction of IEC61850 based Solutions for HV Substations in the Republic of Ireland - Keith Cooney and Kieran Lynch.
  • Introduction of High-Temperature Low Sag Conductors to the Irish Transmission Grid - Ruairi Geary, Tim Condon, Tim Kavanagh, Oisin Armstrong and John Doyle.
  • Power Quality and Flicker Performance of the Tidal Generator, SeaGen - Joe MacEnri, T. Thiringer (Chalmers University) and M. Reed (MCT).
  • Emerging Electric Vehicle Market & Business Models and Interoperability Standards - Eric Khoo and James Gallagher.

ESBI is an active participant in CIGRÉ, regularly contributing to technical committees and groups and sharing expertise. Mick Mackey chaired one of the poster sessions at this year’s event. Eamonn Duggan, T&D Manager with ESBI International Operations is the current chairman of CIGRÉ Ireland and Irish delegate to the Substations Study Committee.
