PROFESSOR PATRICK Cunningham, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government and Arlene O’Neill, newly-selected Dublin Rose and PhD researcher, have been trialling ecars in the run up to Fully Charged 2012, a satellite event of the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF). Both events took place in the Dublin Convention Centre.

Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) 2012 is the largest general science event in Europe that takes place every two years in different cities and Dublin hosted it this year. Professor Cunningham was the Chair of the International Steering Committee for this event and Arlene was an ESOF ambassador.

Professor Cunningham, commented, “Science has a huge role to play in making transport more efficient, reliable and more environmentally sound. With 5,000 researchers, policy makers and business leaders coming to Dublin in July for ESOF 2012, it served as the perfect forum for the Fully Charged conference to discuss the future of sustainable transport”.

Handing over the trial vehicle,, Paul Mulvaney, Managing Director of ESB ecars, said, “It is great to have Professor Cunningham and Arlene on board to promote electric vehicles to the general public, especially around the time of Fully Charged 2012. We have received a very positive response to the Great Electric Drive initiative which illustrates the number as well as the varied cross section of people interested in electric cars.”

2012 EDUCATIONAL BURSARY FOR CHILDREN OF STAFF WITH A QUALIFYING DISABILITY

ESB INTRODUCED the Educational Bursary for Children with Disabilities in 2007. This very progressive initiative is due to run again for 2012.

The scheme consists of two bursaries to the value of €2,000 (subject to PAYE/PRSI) per recipient per year, up to a maximum of four years. This educational bursary supports ESB’s commitments to Equality & Diversity and Corporate Social Responsibility.

The purpose of this initiative is to help children who have a qualifying disability and due to CAO/HETAC points or grade requirements do not meet the eligibility requirements of the separate ESB Education Awards Scheme.

To qualify, children must be aged 16 or older and have an enduring physical, sensory, mental health or intellectual disability. The final decision regarding eligibility will rest with the ESB Occupational Health Specialist.

The ESB Educational Bursary Scheme will apply to such qualifying children who are not in employment, are primarily dependent on their parents/guardians for support, and who are attending an educational institute or are pursuing some form of further education.

The ESB Education Bursary scheme is open to eligible dependent children of regular full-time staff, regular part-time staff currently employed in ESB/ESBI (including those on secondment), to children of staff in receipt of ongoing VSS payments and to children of retired and deceased staff.

Children who are eligible to apply for the separate ESB Education Awards Scheme and who meet the entry conditions specified by CAO/HETAC (or equivalent accrediting institution), are not eligible to apply for the ESB Education Bursary.

There is a limit of one entry per student, and a family may be in receipt of only one ESB Education Bursary or Education Award at any time.

Application Forms (can be downloaded from the ESB Intranet) http://esbnet/sharedservices/careers_benefits/education_support/education_bursary.shtm or obtained along with further information directly from the Equality & Diversity Office:
