Facts: The Olympics

1. At the 1904 St Louis Olympic Games, US gymnast George Eyser walked away with a whopping six medals: three golds, two silvers and one bronze. Not only was that a feat in itself, but George was also an amputee and competed with a wooden peg instead of his left leg!

2. The Olympic Games have only ever been cancelled on three occasions: in 1916, 1940 and 1944. This was due to the grim realities of both World Wars during which period all international events went on the backburner.

3. The Greeks held the first Olympic Games at Mount Olympia in 776 B.C and ceased holding the event ca. 776 A.D. It wasn’t until 1896, however, that the games remerged in their modern incarnation in Athens once again.
