A fitting end to the Olympic Challenge

ON WEDNESDAY JULY 4th the Olympic Challenge came to an end and what a success it has been. The Olympic Challenge which was run by the BSC Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee has been running for the last eight weeks with more than 300 members of staff registering as part of the challenge. Over the last eight weeks our participants have taken numerous pledges such as walking, running, cycling and even quitting smoking in order to improve their health. The improvement in participant’s health was evident from a number of surveys carried out by the Olympic Challenge committee on the Olympic Challenge site and also through the numerous bloggers who kept everyone up-to-date with their pledges. Of course, the added bonus and incentive to carry on and succeed over the eight weeks was seen in the form of the bronze, silver and gold medal’s being presented which included €20, €30 and €50 one4all gift vouchers.

The air of excitement could be felt throughout the corridors of Head Office and Electric Ireland as the question on everyone’s lips was who had one the main prize of the Golden tickets to the Olympic games in London.

A big congratulation goes out to Orla Gardner and Richard Lombard on winning the Olympic tickets and €1,000 spending money which Electric Ireland very kindly provided. Both Orla and Richard were presented with their prizes by a very special guest Olympian, Paul Hession. Paul will be competing in the up coming games in the 200m sprint event and has previously competed in the Olympics in Beijing in 2008. A Q&A with Paul was also held in the conference room in Head Office and Electric Ireland and everyone who attended was really inspired by Paul and the insight he gave to the life of an athlete preparing to compete in the Olympic Games.

The Olympic Committee would like to thank Paul for his generous time and we hope he will have a very successful Olympics which he fully deserves. Paul also presented the gold medal winners with their prizes of a €50 one4all gift voucher and congratulations to Ciaran Doran, Oonagh Delaney, Margaret O’Connor, Paul McNamara, Bernie O’Connor, Hugh McCann, Jeff Walsh, Ciara Whelan, Jim Murphy, Niall O’Connor, Eimear Barrett, Dorottya Rab, Helen Flynn, Matt Cunningham, Conal Mullarkay, Paul McCarthy, Carmel Byrne, Wally Byrne, Eleanor Lane, Billy Byrne, Miriam Hayes, Niall Dineen, Pat Mullen, John O’Riordan on winning the vouchers.

The Olympic Challenge committee would like to thank all the participants for their co-operation and for making this event a true success.

The National Ice Sports Arena (NISA) in Santry, which is the Republic’s only sports competition-sized ice rink, has chosen Electric Ireland to supply its electricity requirements. The arena, which opened for training in April 2012, plays host to hockey, curling and figure skating teams from all over the country.

As part of the contract, Electric Ireland will supply electricity and energy management services to the arena, which will host competitive fixtures and act as a world-class training and development centre for Ireland’s ice sport athletes with the full support of their three main national governing bodies – the Irish Ice Hockey Association (IIHA), the Irish Curling Federation (ICF), and the Irish Skating Association of Ireland (ISAI).

THE OLYMPIC FLAME made an historic trip to Dublin on Wednesday June 6th, as part of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.

From the starting point in Howth, torch bearers carried the Olympic Flame through the city and proceedings culminated in a mid-morning celebration event in St Stephen’s Green.

As a long-time supporter of the work carried out by Pieta House, Electric Ireland was delighted to nominate its CEO, Joan Freeman, to carry the torch on the company’s behalf.

“The torch is a symbol of hope and inspiration and as such we think it is particularly appropriate that the Electric Ireland Torch Bearer would be someone as special as Joan Freeman, given Joan and Pieta’s determined efforts to focus on suicide prevention in Ireland, particularly in these challenging times,” said ESB Chief Executive, Pat O’Doherty.

Joan was one of several ‘non-sporting’ torch bearers who had been selected to carry the torch in acknowledgement of their vital work in the area of social change. As Joan carried the torch through Lower Fitzwilliam Street, Head Office staff lined both sides of the street to cheer her on.
