2 News June/July 2012 www.esb.ie/em Editor’s desk BERniE HEAly letters Dear Editor, I read with great interest your article on the film Stella Days in EM, Apr/ May edition, 2012. I had particular interest in your article, as my late husband, Michael Larkin R.I.P., started his career with ESB during rural electrification. He was located in Co. Clare in 1957 and travelled all over the county, assisting the demonstrator Anna Connolly, Limerick District, and at one stage was even asked “are you a chef?’’ Michael worked and held different positions with the ESB including Head Office. Unfortunately he passed away in April 1997 – sadly, he was due to take early retirement in May 1997. The reason I am writing to you is that Jackie Larkin, the Producer of Stella Days, is our daughter and I was quite familiar with all the happenings of that era. Yours Sincerely, Teresa Larkin This makes for a very interesting closing of the loop’, Teresa. It must have been quite a nostalgic read for you. Kind regards, Editor. Sustainability Day June 21st THIS yEAR, TO mark European Sustainability Week (18th - 22 June, 2012) ESB’s Sustainable Innovations team are holding a half day delegate seminar for Sustainability Champions and Managers. The event will also feature the launch of this year’s Sustainable Innovation Awards. The awards, now in their third year, are a highlight of our annual Sustainability calendar and are an opportunity for teams and individuals throughout the organisation to show how resource efficient working, innovation and knowledge sharing are delivering real value to our business and to communities throughout the country. n to the June/July edition of EM. Hello and welcome We are all delighted to see the lovely summer weather we had longed for finally make an appearance. People are heading off to the beach, the hills, the lakes and other beauty spots to get a few hours enjoying the fresh sea or country air. Many are bringing refreshments and picnics with them and for some the question can be ‘what to do with the resulting litter’! Unfortunately quite a number of people still leave their rubbish after them or, as I continually witness, throw it away as the spin by on bikes or cars. Some of our most beautiful areas are being destroyed by such practices and, as you all know from the various surveys carried out, visitors to Ireland constantly comment on the litter on our streets and roadsides. And it’s not just the day trippers – it would appear that it is something that is lacking in general in relation to pride in and care of our local environments. I know many people are voluntarily picking up litter in their own villages etc. and it’s heartening to see. A recent visit to the Highlands and Western Islands of Scotland brought home to me how much we still need to do here in relation to this. The vast area was spotless – not a sign of even one piece of litter anywhere. Whether remote glens, mountain roads or busy villages the whole countryside was pristine clean. That, despite the fact that it is a major tourist hub throughout the summer and has cyclists, bikers and walkers from around the globe visit the renowned area throughout the year in vast numbers. So with all the ‘green’ initiatives we have going on, let’s make this a litter free summer.
