Sustainable Innovation bi-monthly Award

THIS MONTH’S award for sustainable innovation was presented to the Head Office Champions. The award recognised an outstanding initiative whereby staff are encouraged to grow their own fruit and vegetables at home. A sustained internal communications campaign was put in place by the group followed by an Lunch and Learn information session from Lorraine Foster from the Leinster Branch of ‘Grow Your Own’ which was also broadcast as a Webex event. In total 45 staff participated from around the country, A GIY group that will initially cover Head Office, Stephen Court, Osprey House, Merrion Square or any ESB staff in the vicinity has been set up and will hold monthly lunch time GIY meeting.

“This has proven to be a very engaging initiative in terms of helping staff to consider sustainable innovation in its wider context – not only in the workplace but also in the home and the community,” said John Campion Executive Director HR & Sustainability on presenting the award.

Commenting at the presentation, Corporate Centre Sustainability Manager Claire Kierans said, “It’s easy, inexpensive and fun to grow your own fruit and vegetables and you don’t need a big garden or allotment. It starts with sowing the first seed”.

Why not try growing your own?

  • Save on your food air miles, transform the food chain.
  • Reduce your environmental impact
  • Get outdoors and get involved in the “Grow Your Own” Community
  • Enjoy better tasting food in season
  • Get your hands dirty - build a sense of pride

Now that’s sustainable innovation!

ElectricAid celebrates 25 years

ELECTRICAID formally launched its 25th Anniversary celebrations at the AGM on 24th April last. These celebrations will start in 2012 and go on into 2013, reflecting the formal foundation in 1987 and commencing operations in 1988.

ElectricAid will have a series of events over the next 12 months, basically and primarily to give thanks. “We want to say a simple ‘thank you’ to our friends, sponsors, corporate partners, trade union figures, former committee members and founding fathers – and most of all, to the 3,000 members who over the years have been the bedrock and foundation for all that has been achieved since 1987. Over that time, you have financed thousands of projects, and touched millions of lives.”

A dedicated sub-committee will manage the programme over the coming year, under the leadership of Des Doherty. The highlights of our programme so far include:

  • A main celebration event in September with a very special guest to be confirmed.
  • An inter-denominational service of thanksgiving.
  • A special chance for 25 members to direct €1,000 funding to the charity of their choice( see end of article).
  • A Roadshow exhibition, travelling to various ESB locations, detailing the work done and results achieved in the last quarter century.
  • A special EM souvenir supplement.
  • A Renewal Agenda to prepare for the next 25 years.

You will be hearing much more from us on these celebrations, and thanksgiving!

ElectricAid’s 25/25 Draw

ElectricAid members will have 25 chances to direct funding of €1,000 to a charity of their choice. As part of our 25th Anniversary celebrations, we will hold draws from July to November 2012. The 25 winners can nominate any registered charity, at home or abroad, to receive a grant of €1,000. The charity can be local, national or international. It can be about children, development, health, disabilities, justice, or any other good cause close to your heart.

This is one way for us to say ‘thank you’ to our members who have supported ElectricAid, through good times and bad, to make it the success that it is today, and to serve millions of people in need in Ireland and all over the developing world.

The draws will begin in July with 5 winners being drawn in each of July, August, September, October and November. Members as of the 1st of July will be eligible.

If you’re not in, you can’t win for the charity of your choice but don’t worry, membership can cost you as little as €1 per week!

ELECTRICAID’S 2011 Annual general meeting was held on Tuesday 24th April in Head Office. There was an excellent attendance, which heard encouraging reports on the charity’s strong performance through a difficult year.

The main highlights were:

  • Membership held steady at 2,669. Membership penetration at 25% among staff, 12% among pensioners.
  • Total income €2.104 million.
  • ‘Like for like’ income up 14% to €1.414 million (This excludes special appeals and once-offs)
  • Record number of projects funded – 164 in 45 different countries.
  • €1.362 million spent on normal project funding – a 21% increase on 2010.
  • Successful Special Appeal for the Horn of Africa raised €120,000.
  • A great deal of detailed, behind-the-scenes development work on procedures and documentation.

ElectricAid also launched an exciting programme of 25th Anniversary events for the next 12 months (see separate feature).

2012 is shaping up to be an equally difficult year for Ireland, ESB, and ElectricAid, but we have every confidence in making it equally successful.
