FIRE BRIGADE EXERCISES AT ARDNACRUSHA
Generation Operations
ON 15TH MARCH, Limerick City Fire Brigade visited Ardnacrusha Station to carry out a number of exercises with new recruits. Ardnacrusha offers the Fire Brigade a perfect training ground with the dam, navigation locks and banks all available to challenge climbing and rescue skills. Some of the team members on site were to perform their first shift on duty as fire officers that weekend, so the opportunity for final training was being taken very seriously.
The station welcomes this type of interaction as it maintains good relationships with key personnel within the fire brigade service and ensures the fire brigade crews are familiar with our site. The event was coordinated on site by Haulie Storan, Ardnacrusha Safety Services Officer.
Whilst staff were very interested to see the difficult rescues being roll-played during the day, there were no volunteers to be an ‘injured party’ being rescued from the bottom of the navigation locks!
The exercise included rescuing a person by stretcher on the bank of the dam up to the locks and abseiling down the navigation locks. Crews also carried out a confined space exercise with breathing equipment.
All exercises were very successful and the Fire Chief and Assisting Fire Chiefs who visited the site to view some of the exercises expressed their gratitude to ESB for the opportunity.

ESB Fisheries Conservation reaches 1,000 days with no Lost Time Incidents
On 4th February 2012, ESB Fisheries Conservation reached the milestone of 1,000 days with no lost time incident, a noteworthy achievement given the diverse work and locations involved.
ESB Fisheries Conservation operates three conservation salmon hatcheries on the Rivers Shannon, Erne and Lee, as well as conducting river rehabilitation projects, eel trap and transport work from bases in Belmont and Lanesboro’. This involves many high risk tasks including working-over-water, chemical handling, manual handling, operating heavy plant and machinery, working with tree cutting and pruning equipment and, most significantly, operation of a wide range of heavy machinery.
ESB Fisheries Conservation also holds OSHAS 18001 Certification, first achieved in 2008 and retained since without any major non-conformances.
Noel Greally, Manager Fisheries, Property and Asset Recovery paid tribute to ESB Fisheries staff on this significant achievement: “The wide range of activities undertaken in ESB Fisheries Conservation requires a high level of training and a commitment by all to core safety principles. In particular, the commitment by all staff to the risk assessment process is central to this achievement. In addition, the safety committee, comprising staff representatives from each Fisheries location, has played a central role in devising specific safety policies and in communicating these to all staff. The continued OSHAS 18001 certification is commendable and a recognition of the commitment involved”.
Visiting the Lanesboro’ work base to congratulate staff on achieving this milestone, Seamus Deeny, Manager, Procurement, Overhauls and Contract Management said that there is a good safety culture in Fisheries Conservation and he urged all staff to continue to keep up the good work by making safety their number one priority in all that they do.
