Consortium audits in Malaysia
ESBI
ESB INTERNATIONAL, in consortium with Ernst & Young, carried out a number of audits of Independent Power Plants in Malaysia. These audits are required as part of the regulatory process where licensed independent power producers (IPPs) are required to have an energy and efficiency audit undertaken every four years by independent auditors.
Commenting on this project, the Energy Commission of Malaysia said, “We would like to record our sincere appreciation for the good work completed. The dedication and effort by the consortium in analysing and preparing the report for our review has been above and beyond the call of duty”.
On the strength of the reputation earned from carrying out these audits ESB International, again in a consortium with Ernst & Young, was also awarded a contract to undertake a review of the project management capabilities of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the Malaysian national electricity utility.
Specifically, ESB International is tasked with assessing the adequacy and effectiveness of controls and systems, establishing performance benchmarks and making recommendations for improvement as required. In undertaking the assignment, ESB International is applying the structured project methodology of its project delivery model (PDM), which aligns current practices across ESB with industry best practice.
These projects are the latest in a number that ESB International has successfully undertaken in Malaysia stretching back many years. Malaysia has ambitious plans for the future development of its electricity sector which present significant opportunities for ESB International.
ESBI HOSTS CIGRE PROTECTION AND AUTOMATION WORKING GROUP
ESBI
THE RAPID evolution of microprocessor based protection and automation technology in High Voltage Power System protection and control systems presents significant and immediate challenges for many utilities around the world. This is particularly relevant in the area of high voltage substation commissioning and acceptance testing of their associated protection and control schemes.
A CIGRE Working Group has been created to specifically address these challenges. The title of the working group is: Acceptance, Commissioning and Field Testing techniques for Protection & Automation.
Asset Management Services, ESB International recently hosted a two-day meeting of this group. The group is made up of representatives from international utilities, consultants and manufacturers who are tasked with producing a report proposing recommended industry best practices, techniques and methodologies to the power system engineering industry.
ESB International was represented by Niall Kearns, Manager, Substation Commissioning/ Protection Maintenance, who delivered a presentation on Asset Management Services’ experiences and recommendations in the area. Representatives from France, Sweden, UK, and the United States also attended the meeting.
In the course of the meeting the group also considered technical submissions and contributions from both the group members themselves, as well as from corresponding members around the world. The group expects to deliver a draft report in 2013 followed by a final report in 2014.

ESB Chief Executive Pat O’Doherty, ESB Energy International Executive Director, John McSweeney, and ESB International MD, Ollie Brogan, at a recent meeting with a group of senior Chinese Government officials at ESB International’s Dublin office. The group was in Ireland as guests of the Department of Foreign Affairs, following the Taoiseach’s recent visit to China. China is currently implementing reforms in its state-owned enterprises and the group was especially interested in the lessons learned from such reforms in Irish state-owned companies. It is hoped that this first visit will open opportunities for further interaction between ESB International and Chinese institutions.
LONG SERVICE RECORDS RECOGNISED IN BAHRAIN
ESBI
“RESPECT, RECOGNITION and dignity at work are some of the reasons which encourage employees to remain in an organisation through thick and thin,” said Bahrain Site Manager, Tom Ralph, in his opening speech at the recent long service awards ceremony in Bahrain. Tom highlighted the progress of the current projects and future prospects in Bahrain and attributed the success of ESB International to the focus on delivering clients’ needs and strong teamwork among the staff in achieving this goal.
Paul Murphy, Bahrain Key Account Manager, presented the awards to locally-recruited staff with service of 5 and 10 years. In his speech, Paul showed his appreciation for the team and emphasised the great support from ESB International’s senior management team for the Bahrain operations.
At the start of the ceremony, everyone paused for a moment’s silence in memory of recently deceased employee Manohor Singh who was involved in a tragic road traffic accident in late 2011.
