THIS YEAR’S SUSTAINABILITY Awards attracted 238 entrants from all parts of the company. There were 12 entrants shortlisted for Merit Awards, eight of which were from Energy International.

The overseas and independent plants featured very strongly with four of them shortlisted: Amorebieta, Kulim, Dublin Bay Power and Rousch. Other entrants from Energy International were: Stephen Court, Ardnacrusha, Moneypoint and Generation Operations Central Procurement.

Of the 12 Merit Award winners, four made it to the overall award shortlist, with the final result being:

First Place: Rousch Power,
Pakistan, ESB Energy International
Runner up: Dunmanway, ESB Networks
Third place: Wilton, ESB Networks and Electric Ireland
Fourth place: Head Office

Champions Network

This was the first year Rousch entered the awards scheme, but it already had success in winning a bi-monthly Sustainability Award earlier in the year.

The team at Rousch came up with many sustainability ideas including innovations to reduce the use of paper, electricity and water. It provided reusable shopping bags to staff members and organised the segregation waste at collection points, while the children of staff have undertaken litter picking sessions. Rousch delivered awareness presentations to contractors, families and local schools. It also changed from disposable drinking water bottles to reusable bulk water-containers and have more plans for improving sustainability in the future.

Speaking at the presentation of the award, Rousch Plant Manager Ian Whitehead said, “Sustainability has been a part of the culture at Rousch since ESBI started there in 1997, with bicycles and donkey carts preferred to cars and trucks. I am very proud to be part of a team who are so dedicated to the message of sustainability and have such a belief in the future of the world. Special thanks to Tahir and Khalid who have led many of the initiatives and to all the sustainability champions who have contributed within the monthly meetings. Thanks to all staff and families for embracing our message and spreading it by words and example”.

There were many other activities which took place during Sustainability Week, which ran from Monday to Friday October 10th-14th.

ESB Independent Generation marked Sustainability Week with an award ceremony for the winners of its Sustainability initiative. The initiative, which commenced in March, saw all of ESBI g’s staff being broken into teams of six and provided with sustainability projects to work on. The projects were completed in September and were judged by Ray Hester and Liam Ring. The top two teams then presented on the day of the awards. Runners-up were the ‘Carbon Captors’ whose main project was on work place travel, with the winners being the ‘Green Theme’ whose main project focused on waste management.

The event was opened by ESB Sustainability Manager Tony Carroll, with the awards being made by ESB Energy International Chief Executive Pat O’Doherty, who also provided the closing address. Fergus Sharkey of WaveBob was the guest presenter and gave a very interesting presentation on wave energy.

Formal handover complete of Aghada CCGT plant, equipment and systems

Generation Operations

WHEN ESB’S 435MW gas-fired station at Aghada, Co Cork, was formally commissioned in May 2010, there remained a number of items which needed to be closed out by the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, Alstom.

These outstanding items included the contract snag/punch list, the handover of the remaining works and finalisation of the plant operation and maintenance documentation.

Station and ESBI resources worked closely with Alstom EPC on site over the past 18 months to address all these outstanding items. On Wednesday October 19th, a major milestone in Aghada’s history was reached when the management of the remaining outstanding EPC works was transferred by agreement to Alstom Power Services under a long-term service agreement. This effectively brings ESB’s major capital investment project to a close.

Well done to all those who worked and persevered since May 2010 to achieve this important milestone. Aghada Generating Station now has an excellent end product as a result of this fine effort.
