ESB’s Participation in the Government’s National Internship Scheme - JOBBRIDGE
ESB IS DELIGHTED to participate in the Government’s National Internship Scheme, JobBridge. JobBridge is a key element of the Government’s Jobs Initiative. JobBridge, which consists of 5,000 places, will give individuals on the Live Register for at least three months the opportunity to undertake a quality internship in an organisation in the private, public, community or voluntary sectors for a six/nine month period. Interns will receive an allowance of £50 per week in addition to their existing social welfare entitlement. This allowance will be payable for the duration of the internship. As the Department of Social Protection is paying the weekly £50 allowance to interns, there will be no direct cost to participating organisations.
JobBridge is open to jobseekers that are unable to get a job without experience, either as new entrants to the labour market after training or education or as unemployed workers seeking to learn new skills.
ESB has committed to taking on 200 interns throughout the company by 30th June 2013. To date ESB have advertised 68 internships on the JobBridge website and a number of interns have taken up internships with ESB in a cross section of roles throughout the company.

ESB ecars Key Partner in a Smart Energy EU Project
ESB ECARS IS a partner in an EU project called Future Internet for Smart Energy (FINSENY) which is part of the European Commission’s Future Internet Research programme. The project is looking at how the internet will, in the future, impact on and help develop electro-mobility and smart transport, smart houses and smart grids. It will also study the reverse impact of these technologies - how they will themselves drive changes in the way the internet works. To identify these requirements, key organisations from both the energy and Information & Communication Technology (ICT) sectors have teamed up to jointly develop new solutions.
ESB ecars is one of 35 companies in the £5million Euorpean project. The Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG), a centre for excellence for ICT research and innovation based in Waterford Institute of Technology, is also involved. The third Irish partner is Intune Networks, a home grown Irish company that has become the world leader in optical switches for ICT systems. Its patentedoptical packet switch & transport (OPST) developments allow ultra-fast switching of computer network communications allowing vast amounts of data be used much faster than ever before.
ESB ecars Chief Technology Officer Senan McGrath said, “ESB ecars is committed to helping Ireland achieve its environmental targets and is tasked with making this a reality by rolling out a nationwide charging infrastructure including the supporting IT systems. We are also very pleased that our project gives opportunities for leading-edge Irish companies and we are delighted to work with them.”
