Energy Cup – ESB GAA v BGE GAA

THE INAUGURAL MATCH between ESB and BGE took place under floodlights in Pairc Uí Chiaráin, Athlone on the evening of Friday November 4th with the victor’s prize being the new Energy Cup.

Both sides featured players from around the country and ESB included players from its recent acquisition - NIE. The game was attended by both company Chief Executives, John Mullins of BGE and ESB’s outgoing Chief Executive Padraig McManus.

From the throw in, ESB launched a crescendo of attacks on the BGE goal and at half time the score line read ESB 1-15 to BGE’s 0-2.

The second half mirrored the first with ESB rampant all over the pitch and although BGE endeavoured gallantly, and were unfortunate not to get a few more scores, they encountered an ESB team that was in top form. The final score line of 3 -23 to 0-10 reflected ESB’s excellent performance on the night.

“ESB launched a crescendo of attacks on the BGE goal and at half time the score line read ESB 1-15 to BGE’s 0-2.”

Both teams had a number of late withdrawals and whether this affected BGE to a greater extent remains to be seen. Next year’s venue will be organised by BGE who will, no doubt, be determined to turn around this defeat.

It’s impossible to single out any ESB player as each one, including substitutes, were outstanding. BGE was best served by their current Cork star, Daniel Goulding who scored half of their total score of 10 points.

At a presentation dinner later that evening the ESB team was presented with the Energy Cup and medals by outgoing Chief Executive, Padraig McManus.

Colum Grogan, ESB GAA Chairman, welcomed both teams and thanked John Mullins and Padraig McManus for their support in this new sporting exchange between the two utility companies. Both Chief Executives thanked the players for an entertaining game and expressed their support for this event to continue. They outlined the business association that both companies have with each other and a sporting exchange like the Energy Cup was a welcoming aspect of this association.

ESB GAA President Paul Stapleton, paid tribute to all participants and paid special thanks to the organising committee of Colum Grogan, Hugh Connaughton, John O’Riordan, Tony Heavin, Eddie Nally, Trish McElvaney and Shauna Brady for making the occasion such an entertaining event.

Paul made a presentation on behalf of ESB GAA to ESB Padraig McManus and wished him a long and happy retirement.

Energy Efficiency at home - thermal imaging camera available for staff

ESB staff can now avail of a new scheme to assist you in learning about how efficiently your home uses heat. The Sustainability Team have developed a programme which allows staff to borrow a thermal imaging camera for use at home, to help in identifying those areas where heat is being lost, or where an investment in energy efficiency would reap dividends.

Users of the camera are very impressed with what it has to offer. Fergus Keane, Environment and Sustainability, ESB Energy International, who retrofitted his house in 2009 says “The camera is an invaluable aid in identifying problems relating to heat loss, insulation gaps, uncovering how underfloor heating is working beneath the tiles, and can provide a fascinating insight into the otherwise invisible patterns of heat movement around your home”.

The camera ‘loan-and-return’ scheme will be administered by the Sustainability Team, look out for details on esbnet, or contact your local sustainability champion for more information.

Fault reporting goes mobile on new NIE site

A new application to enable customers to report faults online is one of the key features on NIE’s new website and mobile site.

The two sites being launched in December have been designed to help customers understand the role of NIE as a network company. They also cater for the growing number of customers with internet enabled phones and a preference to contact companies online rather than over the phone.

As well as the online fault reporting system, the sites offer online critical care customer registration and an improved facility to submit meter readings. Plans for additional online self service applications are planned for 2012.

The development of the new sites follows significant customer and stakeholder research and competitor analysis. The aim has been to move towards a site which is more relevant for NIE’s customers.
