Sustainability Week 2011 in ESB Networks

THIS YEAR’S SUSTAINABILITY Week took place between Monday and Friday October 10th and 14th. A variety of events and activities were organised at a local and national level both within ESB and outside in the wider community. The week provided Networks staff with an ideal opportunity to get involved in the sustainability programme and agenda.

While water conservation was a major theme for the week, the online e-learning sustainability training course also provided an important focal point for activities at many locations where it was arranged for staff to take the course in a group setting and this provided a perfect forum for interaction and discussion on sustainability issues.

Among the many other excellent local events organised during the week were:

• Community events including visits to local schools
• Lunch and learn events on a variety of sustainability-related topics
• Quizzes and colouring competitions with sustainable prizes
• Clean-ups of offices, fleet vehicles and yards
• Waste management initiatives including yard walkabouts
• Promotion of water conservation initiatives
• Daily sustainability tips by e-mail and text
• Collection of old PCs, IT equipment and mobile phones for recycling

In particular, the school visits organised in a number of locations across the country proved very successful and rewarding to those involved.

During the week, ESB became one of the first companies in Ireland to be certified with the Business Working Responsibly Mark. The mark, which certifies corporate excellence in responsible and sustainable business practices in Ireland, was awarded to only four companies in Ireland including ESB.

All in all, another very successful Sustainability Week.

2011 Sustainability Awards:
Also, during Sustainability Week, the winners of the 2011 Sustainability Awards were announced by Sustainability Director John Campion. Well done to all the Networks staff who entered this years scheme. In particular, congratulations to the Networks teams in Dunmanway and Wilton who finished second and third respectively and to the three other Networks locations that received merit awards: Finglas, Mullingar/Tullamore and Newcastlewest. Rousch Power Station in Pakistan was the overall winner.

Technical Seminar for Engineers in ESB Networks

A TWO-DAY TECHNICAL seminar for engineers, organised by HR ESB Networks, took place in South Lotts Road and Leopardstown Road on 11th & 12th October. The event was attended by 35 engineers that included ESB Networks' Scholarship engineers, recently recruited graduate and professional engineers as well as a number of engineers from ESB Energy International that are currently on assignment in ESB Networks as part of the Graduate Engineer Development Programme.

A key objective of the Development Programme is to support the professional development of engineers through a combination of structured work assignments and relevant off-thejob learning. The content of the seminar was designed following a learning needs analysis discussion with a representative sample of participants. In addition, the advice of a number of engineering managers proved invaluable in designing a learning solution that included modules on:

• Plant Design (MV Overhead Line Design; 38Kv Overhead Line Design)
• Safety (Safety Responsibilities of an engineer; Safety Audits / Standards; Contractor Safety)
• Operations (System Management Control & Operation; 38kV System Outage Planning; System Protection; Operation Systems - SCADA and OMS; Operations Innovations; Electrical Safety Rules and Operations Policy and EirGrid).

Lecture inputs were provided by various content experts in Asset Management and Safety, Quality & Environment in ESB Networks. Special thanks then to Paul Shiel, Noel Heffernan, Dominic O’Brien, Kieran Cogan, Richard King, Derek Hynes, Brian Tapley, Hugh Borland, Frank Giblin, Martin Hand, and Michael Murphy for so willingly sharing their knowledge during the event.

VISIT TO PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Pupils from Fourth Class in Scoil Eoin Phoil, Tullamore, with their teacher, Brid Gallagher, and Danny McConville from ESB Networks. Danny visited the school to speak to the children about the importance of creating a green environment in their school and to introduce them to an electric car and explain the benefits of using electric cars. ESB is installing charge points to power electric cars all over Ireland.

Jake takes charge of outage notification

One of the hazards that Network Technicians encounter when notifying consumers of an outage is the house dog waiting to snap at their fingers as they put a card through the letterbox. However, this cheeky lad wasn’t as devious, he just seemed to want to show Ollie Huges that any mail delivered to his house had to be vetted by him first! The dog’s owner told Ollie, who is based at Leopardstown Road, that Jake checks all her mail!

BASIL MOVES INTO SOUTH LOTTS

Staff based at ESB Networks in South Lotts Road have a new recruit! Fondly named ‘Basil’ the bushy tailed fox possibly considers himself on ‘internship’ and staff noticed the reclusive ‘guest’ lying low in the upper beams of the roof. However Basil regularly makes flying visits for food and a wander around the hot spots of South Dublin but returns faithfully to take up surveillance duty at his post in the Networks Depot!
