Schools Sustainability Tour launched

John Campion, ESB Director Sustainability and HR officially launches the Schools Sustainability Tour with staff from Sustainability, Ecars and Corporate Centre Sustainability Champions. An interactive DVD and accompanying user guide is one of the resources available to staff who will participate in the schools programme. Depending on the school’s location a demo of the ecar is also possible.

ONE OF THE initiatives arising from the Corporate Centre Sustainability Leadership Plan is the development of a programme to promote awareness about sustainability issues in primary schools. The aim of the initiative is to encourage Corporate Centre staff to visit primary schools in their locality and give a presentation on topics related to sustainability, as well as demonstrate an electric car.

ESB HR & Sustainability Director John Campion formally launched the Schools Sustainability Tour with staff members from Sustainability and Ecars and with Corporate Centre Sustainability Champions, all of whom who are involved in its ongoing development and success.

A toolbox of resources is available for anyone who is interested in participating. It includes an interactive DVD presentation and a quiz, FAQs, ecar brochures and videos, as well as an ecar depending on the school’s location.

A master class will be organised at the beginning of December for those who would like to learn more, from staff who have already carried out the school visits, about the format used for the visit, the content of the DVD and about ecars generally.

ecar trial participant’s 100km daily commute

LIAM DOYLE, MAINTENANCE team leader at Lough Ree Power, has been using an electric car on his daily trip from Athlone to Lough Ree for the past four months. His commute is a round trip of over 100km.

Liam won use of the ecar in the staff competition. This trial is part of an ESB ecars research project studying the usage patterns of electric cars.

Liam has grown to love driving the ecar and has really discovered the benefits of electric car driving. With charging points at home and at the power station, Liam has found that his daily commute was very accessible with the Mitsubishi i-MiEV trial car. Over his four month trial he totted up over 8000km on the i-MiEV, a car he found that had ‘amazing acceleration and a solid feel on the road’.

The car was used for school visits to leaving cert engineering students in Lanesboro, transitional students in St.Marys Secondary School Edenderry and even for a charity walk in Ballinabrackey, outside Kinnegad. It received a great welcome and interest everywhere it went, especially amongst the other staff in Lough Ree.
