Strong community engagement at Moneypoint
Generation Operations
AS PART OF its long-standing and very successful community engagement programme, Moneypoint recently awarded prizes for its 2011 Schools Competition.
This year’s competition, which was organised by the station’s Sustainability Committee in conjunction with Clare Education Centre, was once again a resounding success. The theme of the competition centred around environmental and sustainable initiatives achieved in Moneypoint over recent years. The competition took the form of a 20-question quiz, and the response from local schools was as overwhelming and as enthusiastic as ever.
The overall competition winner was Tulla National School, with eight runner-up prizes awarded to national schools of Killaloe, Lissycasey, Holy Family, Tullyglass, Bansha, Kilkee, Cree and Mullagh.
In keeping with the environmental and sustainability theme of the competition, the committee decided this year’s prizes would consist of recycled stationery for use in day-to-day activities at the schools. Key members of Moneypoint’s Sustainability Committee visited each of the winning schools to present the prizes.
Also during these presentations, a committee member outlined to the children ESB’s commitment to a more sustainable future and the station’s electric vehicle and bio-diesel vans were brought to many of the schools. The vehicles sparked some lively debate and questions amongst the children who showed remarkable knowledge and awareness of all things environmental.
The committee would like to thank all the schools and particularly the children who put great effort into their research for answers to the competition questions.
As part of other Moneypoint’s Community Engagement Programme initiatives, Glenn Pope, John Wall and Damon Murphy recently visited Burrane National School to present a cheque for some IT equipment sponsored by the station. During this visit, the staff also took the opportunity to demonstrate the station’s electric vehicle to the young, knowledge-hungry students.
Over the decades, Moneypoint has actively engaged with schools in the county and while the early years focused on the message of how electricity is generated, the young students are now keen to hear how we can actively manage our environment and use the resources at our disposal in a sustainable manner.
The Fiat Florino electric vehicle has already visited a number of schools in the county and each time has sparked entertaining and insightful debate. Back at the station, the vehicle is now the preferred mode of transport when bringing visitors around the site, with all users surprised by its comfort and ease of operation.
