Horn of Africa – let’s make it to €120k!

SINCE WE LAUNCHED our Appeal in late July, we have again been astounded and gratified by the response of the ESB community – staff and pensioners alike. Even in these harder economic times, you have opened your hearts and reached out to help people you will never know, in their hour of greatest need. Our pensioner and VSS friends have been particularly generous. All we can say to every donor is – thank you, you have saved many, many, lives.

At the time of writing (September 8th), the appeal total stands at €112,000 and we now have increased our target to €120,000, which would be a really superb result. We have already spent €105,000 – see below for details. There is one more funding application on hand, which we would dearly love to fund with €15,000. We are still short, the needs are still acute, and we hope that anyone who has not already contributed will now help to bridge that life-saving gap. The on-line donation facility is still open – please see the special feature on the ESBnet home page. Every euro counts and every donation is deeply appreciated. Thank you.

THE FIRST electric car to enter a Cannonball Run anywhere in the world has successfully completed the 900km tour around Ireland. ESB ecars, a sponsor of the event, powered the all-electric Nissan LEAF car by plugging into fast charge points along the three-day route in Monasterevin, Kilkenny, Dungarvan, Galway, Limerick and Athlone. Overnight charging took place in Cork and Westport. The Cannonball Run passed through 14 counties and drove east-west and north-south demonstrating that driving an electric car around Ireland is possible by using the charging infrastructure that is already in place. There was overwhelming support and interest in the electric car at each tour stop. The Cannonball Run, in aid of Barretstown, has raised more that €235,000 over the past two years to help rebuild the lives of children suffering from cancer. More than 150 supercars took part and an estimated 100,000 spectators lined the streets.

“We are delighted to have been involved in this action-packed three-day event to raise funds and awareness for Barretstown,” said ESB ecars Managing Director Paul Mulvaney.

“There was great support from the general public for this worthy cause and indeed for the electric car as it travelled around the country. We are thrilled to have successfully completed the Cannonball Run and the opportunity to showcase the full scope of the electric car on Irish roads.”

PENSIONS LEVY

You will have seen from media coverage that in June this year the Government passed the Finance Act 2011 which imposed a four year levy on the assets of pension funds and allows for a reduction in benefits to members including pensions in payment to adjust for the cost of the levy.

The cost of this annual levy of 0.6% over the four years for ESB Defined Benefit Pension Scheme is estimated at €80million. Following legal advice the Trustees made the first payment as required at the end of September.

The implications of the levy will be reviewed by the parties to the scheme following completion of the Actuarial Valuation at the end of 2011.
